1941 Yesterday's bombing of Pearl Harbor and America's sudden involvement in the war change the tentative plans of American League owners. At their meeting, the group was going to consider shifting the Browns from St. Louis to Los Angeles.

1947 Brooklyn acquires infielder Billy Cox and southpaw Preacher Roe from the Pirates, and both will play vital roles in the success of the Dodgers during the next decade. The trade, which also includes utility player Gene Mauch, sends hurlers Vic Lombardi and Al Gregg as well as Dixie Walker, a former batting champ who asked to be traded in the spring because he didn't want to play with Jackie Robinson, to Pittsburgh.

1966 The Yankees trade two-time MVP Roger Maris to the Cardinals for third baseman Charley Smith. The former Bronx Bomber outfielder will play a key role in the Redbirds' World Championship next season and will help the club win another pennant the following year, while New York's newest infielder will hit only .224 during his two-year tenure in New York.

1983 Southpaw Sid Fernandez is traded by the Dodgers along with utility infielder Ross Jones to the Mets in exchange for infielder/outfielder Bob Bailor and left-hander Carlos Diaz. 'El Sid' will compile a 98-78 record along with a very respectable ERA of 3.14 during his ten-year tenure with New York.

2007 In U.S. District court, Barry Bonds pleads not guilty to to five felony charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. Four years ago, the sworn testimony to a grand jury given by the new home run king, in which he denied using performance-enhancing drugs, is now being challenged by the federal government

2009 As a result of a three-team, seven-player deal, Curtis Granderson and Edwin Jackson leave the Tigers to play for the Yankees and Diamondbacks, respectively, and New York right-hander Ian Kennedy is dealt to Arizona. The Bronx Bombers also send Phil Coke and Austin Jackson to Detroit and the D-Backs deal Max Scherzer and Daniel Schlereth to Detroit.
Всем привет! :hi:

1941 Although having a 3-C draft deferment due to being the sole support of his family, Bob Feller, last year's American League leading pitcher with 27 victories for the Indians, becomes the first major leaguer to enlist after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The 23 year-old navy recruit has already won 107 major league games.

1965 The Reds deal Frank Robinson to the Orioles for Milt Pappas, Jack Baldschun and Dick Simpson. The trade, now considered among the worst in baseball history, was defended by Cincinnati's general manager Bill DeWitt who claimed the outfield slugger was "an old 30", prior to the future Hall of Famer winning the American League triple crown in his first year in Baltimore.

1965 Eleven days shy of his 84th birthday, former Cardinals, Dodgers, and Pirates executive Wesley Branch Rickey, named by ESPN in 1999 as the most influential sports figure of the twentieth century, suffers a heart attack, falling over the podium while beginning his remarks to an audience during his induction into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. ‘The Mahatma’, who is responsible for breaking the color barrier in 1947 with the signing of Jackie Robinson and implementing the concept of farm systems for the major leagues, will die three weeks later while in intensive care at Boone County Memorial Hospital.

1988 In a deal that is widely credited for starting a trend for more games being covered by a regional sports network than by over-the-air stations, the Yankees sign a twelve-year television contract with the Madison Square Garden Network. In 2002, the Yankees leave MSG to form a regional cable television channel, the Yankees Entertainment and Sports (YES) Network.

2003 Kazuo Matsui, a Japanese seven-time All-Star shortstop, agrees to a three-year $20.1-million deal with the Mets. Twenty-eight year-old 'Little' Matsui hit .305 with 33 home runs while driving in 84 runs last season with the Seibu Lions.

2009 Andy Pettitte (14-8, 4.16) agrees to a $11.75 million, one-year deal to return to the Yankees next season. The 37 year-old southpaw played a key role in the team capturing its 27th World Championship, going 4-0 in his five postseason starts, including victories in the clincher in all three postseason rounds against the Twins, Angels, and Phillies.

2013 The Mets sign Curtis Granderson to a four-year, $60 million contract, the team's richest free-agent deal since Sandy Alderson became the GM in 2010. The 32 year-old outfielder, who hit 84 homers in two seasons for the Yankees before being limited to 61 games last year due to injuries, is expected to provide some much needed power for the team that ranked 25th in the long ball in 2013.
1919 The National League, spearheaded by the leadership of Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss, approves the banning of the spitball, allowing just the current spitballers presently throwing the pitch to use it under a "grandfather" clause. A year later the American League will adopt the same rule.

1924 The American and National League agree to a permanent rotation system for the World Series. The new agreement calls for Game 1 and 2 to be played at one league's park, the next three at the other team's park, with the final two games (if necessary) back at the first venue. The Senior Circuit is granted the inaugural advantage in next season's Fall Classic.

1935 The Philadelphia A's trade Jimmie Foxx and Johnny Marcum to the Red Sox for Gordon Rhodes, prospect George Savino and $150,000. The future Hall of Fame slugger will play six years for Boston, including his third MVP season in 1938 in which he hit .349, slugged 50 home runs and drove in 175 runs.

1971 In one of the worst deals ever made, the Mets trade Nolan Ryan and three prospects to the Angels for six time All-Star third baseman Jim Fregosi. The fireballer from Texas will set the all-time strikeout record (5,714) and will become a member of the Hall of Fame while Fregosi (.232, 5, 32), who will play less than two full seasons in New York, will provide little help for the team.

1972 The American League votes unanimously to adopt the designated hitter rule on a trial basis for three years. The concept, that permits a team to designate a player to bat in place of the pitcher, will be implemented in some measure by most collegiate and professional leagues with the National League and Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball's Central League being the notable exceptions.

1975 The American League owners agree to let Bill Veeck back into baseball by allowing him to reacquire the White Sox when the maverick purchases the team from John Allyn for nearly $10 million. The Pale Hose new owner's second tenure in the Windy City will be best remembered for the infamous Disco Demolition Night promotion in 1979, which results in a riot and a forfeit to Detroit at Comiskey Park.
1928 In an effort to speed up the game and add more offense, National League president John Heydler proposes the concept of a designated batter for the pitcher. The American League opposes the idea and the NL withdraws the proposal before Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis is asked to break the deadlock.

1941 The Giants trade hurler Bill Lohrman, catcher James O'Dea, first baseman Johnny McCarthy and $50,000 to the Cardinals to obtain first baseman Johnny Mize. The Giants' new infielder, despite missing three years due to WWII, will spend five productive seasons of his Hall of Fame career with the team, hitting .299 and averaging more than 100 RBIs per season.

1951 “I can no longer produce for my ballclub, my manager, my teammates, and my fans the sort of baseball their loyalty to me deserves.” - Joe DiMaggio
At the Yankees' Fifth Avenue suite in the Squibb Tower, a tearful Joe DiMaggio, two weeks after his 37th birthday, announces to the press his decision to retire from baseball. The Bronx Bomber outfielder, claiming he "no longer has it" due to age and injuries, ends his thirteen year career with a lifetime .325 BA and 361 home runs, rejecting owner Dan Topping’s $100,000 offer to play next season.

1956 A major league player association is formed with Bob Feller, a future Hall of Fame hurler with the Indians, being named its first president. The labor organization, one of many attempts by the players to form a union, will prove to be very successful a decade later when Marvin Miller is hired to be the MLBPA's first executive director in 1966.

1959 After their offer to deal Roger Maris for Dick Groat is rejected by the Pirates, the A's, who had been prohibited by the league from trading the slugging outfielder to the Yankees for 18 months after obtaining him from the Indians on June, 15, 1958, send the right-fielder and two other players to New York in exchange for Hank Bauer, Don Larsen, Norm Siebern and Marv Throneberry. The year and a half moratorium on the potential trade was put into place to alleviate the perception that Kansas City was serving as a 'big league' farm club for the Bronx Bombers.

1975 In a busy day of trading, the Yankees acquire pitchers Dock Ellis and Ken Brett, and second baseman Willie Randolph from the Pirates for hurler Doc Medich. In a separate deal with the Angels, the club trades Bobby Bonds for outfielder Mickey Rivers and pitcher Ed Figueroa.

1903 The Cardinals trade future Hall of Fame right-hander Mordecai Brown and catcher Jack O’Neill to the Cubs in exchange for backstop Larry McLean and Jack Taylor, a righty who will set the record for consecutive complete-games in one season next year with 39 when he compiles a 20-19 record for the Redbirds. Three-Finger Brown will post a 188-86 (.686) record, including six consecutive seasons of 20+ wins, during his ten-year tenure with Chicago.

1941 The Dodgers obtain Arky Vaughn from the Pirates for right-hander Luke Hamlin, 1B/OF Jimmy Wasdell and catcher Babe Phelps. The future Hall of Fame infielder, who will have his stint in Brooklyn interrupted by WWII, plays four seasons for the club, compiling a .291 batting average.

1952 Peter J. McGovern becomes the president of the Little League, replacing Charles Durban, who resigned due to ill health. The organization, which started in 1939 with two leagues, has now grown to 1,800 in 48 states and international sites.

1998 After being given his last rites, Hall of Fame outfielder Joe DiMaggio appears to make a miraculous recovery, defying the doctors' dire predictions. In mid-January, the 'Yankee Clipper' is allowed to go home after a 99-day hospital stay, but will die at his home in Florida on March 8th after a long battle with lung cancer.

1975 The Tigers trade pitcher Mickey Lolich and outfielder Billy Baldwin to the Mets in exchange for outfielder Rusty Staub and pitcher Bill Laxton.

1998 Signing a seven-year deal with the Dodgers, Kevin Brown (18-7, 2.38) becomes baseball's first 100+ million dollar man. The right-hander, much to the chagrin of the other owners, is the first major leaguer to earn an average salary of $15 million per season.

2013 The Mariners land the most sought-after free agent when the team signs Robinson Cano to a 10-year, $240-million contract, a value that equals Albert Pujols' deal with the Angels for the third largest in baseball history. The Yankees, the 32 year-old's former team who did not want to commit those kinds of dollars or years for their All-Star second baseman, recently inked outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury for $153 million (7 years) and catcher Brian McCann for $85 million (5 years).
1906 The A's sell Andy Coakley, a twenty-game winner in 1905, to the Reds. The right-hander, who pitched under the name of Jack McAllister as a rookie in 1902, will later enjoy a thirty-seven year career as the baseball coach for Columbia University.

1911 New York politician James E. Gaffney and former player Attorney Montgomery Ward purchase the National League franchise Boston Doves. Due to Gaffney's tie to Tammany Hall, the team will be called the Braves.

1954 The Dodgers trade third baseman Billy Cox and left-hander Preacher Roe to the Orioles for minor league prospects Harry Schwegeman and Johnny Jancse and $50,000. Brooklyn will use the cash for a bonus to sign a southpaw from Lafayette High School with control problems named Sandy Koufax.

1956 The Dodgers trade Jackie Robinson to the cross-town rivals, the Giants, for pitcher Dick Littlefield and $35,000. Jackie, who according to some accounts had already decided privately to leave the game to work for Chock Full of Nuts, publicly retires from baseball rather than to accept the trade.

1969 Curt Flood attends the Players' Association executive board meeting to seek financial assistance in his attempt to sue major league baseball on the grounds that the reserve clause violates Federal antitrust laws. Although skeptical about the outcome of the suit, the player reps vote 25-0 to support the recently traded outfielder, who refuses to report to the Phillies after being dealt by the Cardinals.

2001 The Yankees sign free-agent Jason Giambi to a seven-year deal worth $120 million. The 2000 MVP and this year's runner-up drove in 120 runs, hit 38 home runs, and had a .342 batting average for the wild card Oakland A's this season.

2010 The Mariners honor Dave Niehaus, the team's long-time broadcaster, who died suddenly last month, with a Safeco Field ceremony that is attended by his family, team officials, former players and thousands of fans. The Hall of Fame announcer, who had been in the Seattle booth since the franchise's first pitch in 1977, is remembered by Ken Griffey Jr., in a video message, as a guy who was a class act that meant more to the city than the players.
On This Date In BaseBall History / 14.12.15
1948 The Senators trade pitcher Early Wynn and first baseman Mickey Vernon to the Indians for first baseman Eddie Robinson and pitchers Joe Hayness and Eddie Klieman. Wynn will be a four-time twenty-game winner during his ten years with the Tribe.

1948 It's a busy day for the Phillies as the team purchases Ken Trinkle from the Giants and trade pitchers Walter Dubiel and Dutch Leonard to the Cubs for first baseman Eddie Waitkas and pitcher Hank Borowy. Ruth Ann Steinhagen, a crazy ass bitch totally obsessed with former Cub Waitkas, is very upset with the trade and will try to kill him upon his return to Chicago with Philadelphia.

1960 The two new American League franchises, the first expansion teams in over a half of a century, select their rosters in a player draft. The 'new' Washington Senators select Yankee southpaw Bobby Shantz and the Los Angeles Angels opt for Yankee righty Eli Grba.

1985 After a two-year battle with lymphatic cancer, Roger Maris dies in a Houston hospital at the age of 51. Former Yankees teammates Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle, John Blanchard, and Bill Skowron along with Whitey Herzog and Bob Allison will as serve pall bearers.

1896 The first pitching machine, created by Princeton professor Charles E. Hinton, is demonstrated in the university's gymnasium. The mathematics instructor's device resembles a rifle which shoots the ball toward the batter.

1900 The Giants trade Amos Rusie, a veteran pitcher who hasn't played since 1898, but won 20+ games in each season during his eight years with the team, to the Reds for Christy Mathewson. 'Matty', a future Hall of Famer, will post a 372-188 record and will become a legend during his 17-year tenure in New York.

1910 During a five hour session at the Hotel Breslin in New York, National League president Tom Lynch informs the owners that umpires will be required to take a 'severe' eye test before the start of the season. As a result of the edict, any arbitrator found to have defective eyesight will not be allowed to work.

1967 The Mets obtain Tommy Agee, the 1966 Rookie of the Year, and utility infielder Al Weis from the White Sox in exchange for Buddy Booker, Tommy Davis, Jack Fisher and Billy Wynne. New York's newest additions will both play a pivotal role in the team's 1969 World Championship season.

1980 Dave Winfield (.276, 20, 87) becomes the highest-paid player in the history of sports, when he agrees to a ten-year free-agent deal with the Yankees worth a record $16 million. After announcing the former Padres outfielder's deal, team owner George Steinbrenner tells 34 year-old Reggie Jackson (.300, 41, 111) who had been asked his opinion about the acquisition by The Boss and had heartily endorsed the signing, he will will not be offered an extended contract when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season because of his age.

1981 The Yankees and Ron Guidry agree to a four-year, $3.6 million deal keeping the free agent in New York. During the span of the contract, 'Gator' will average nearly 17 wins a season.

2015 New York Yankee general manager Brian Cashman did shit concerning the improvement of the team.
