1911 New York politician James E. Gaffney and former player Attorney Montgomery Ward purchase the National League franchise Boston Doves. Due to Gaffney's tie to Tammany Hall, the team will be called the Braves.
1954 The Dodgers trade third baseman Billy Cox and left-hander Preacher Roe to the Orioles for minor league prospects Harry Schwegeman and Johnny Jancse and $50,000. Brooklyn will use the cash for a bonus to sign a southpaw from Lafayette High School with control problems named Sandy Koufax.
1956 The Dodgers trade Jackie Robinson to the cross-town rivals, the Giants, for pitcher Dick Littlefield and $35,000. Jackie, who according to some accounts had already decided privately to leave the game to work for Chock Full of Nuts, publicly retires from baseball rather than to accept the trade.
1969 Curt Flood attends the Players' Association executive board meeting to seek financial assistance in his attempt to sue major league baseball on the grounds that the reserve clause violates Federal antitrust laws. Although skeptical about the outcome of the suit, the player reps vote 25-0 to support the recently traded outfielder, who refuses to report to the Phillies after being dealt by the Cardinals.
2001 The Yankees sign free-agent Jason Giambi to a seven-year deal worth $120 million. The 2000 MVP and this year's runner-up drove in 120 runs, hit 38 home runs, and had a .342 batting average for the wild card Oakland A's this season.
2010 The Mariners honor Dave Niehaus, the team's long-time broadcaster, who died suddenly last month, with a Safeco Field ceremony that is attended by his family, team officials, former players and thousands of fans. The Hall of Fame announcer, who had been in the Seattle booth since the franchise's first pitch in 1977, is remembered by Ken Griffey Jr., in a video message, as a guy who was a class act that meant more to the city than the players. 1948 It's a busy day for the Phillies as the team purchases Ken Trinkle from the Giants and trade pitchers Walter Dubiel and Dutch Leonard to the Cubs for first baseman Eddie Waitkas and pitcher Hank Borowy. Ruth Ann Steinhagen, a crazy ass bitch totally obsessed with former Cub Waitkas, is very upset with the trade and will try to kill him upon his return to Chicago with Philadelphia.
1960 The two new American League franchises, the first expansion teams in over a half of a century, select their rosters in a player draft. The 'new' Washington Senators select Yankee southpaw Bobby Shantz and the Los Angeles Angels opt for Yankee righty Eli Grba.
1985 After a two-year battle with lymphatic cancer, Roger Maris dies in a Houston hospital at the age of 51. Former Yankees teammates Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle, John Blanchard, and Bill Skowron along with Whitey Herzog and Bob Allison will as serve pall bearers. [/spoiler]

'Matty', a future Hall of Famer, will post a 372-188 record and will become a legend during his 17-year tenure in New York.
1910 During a five hour session at the Hotel Breslin in New York, National League president Tom Lynch informs the owners that umpires will be required to take a 'severe' eye test before the start of the season. As a result of the edict, any arbitrator found to have defective eyesight will not be allowed to work.
1967 The Mets obtain Tommy Agee, the 1966 Rookie of the Year, and utility infielder Al Weis from the White Sox in exchange for Buddy Booker, Tommy Davis, Jack Fisher and Billy Wynne. New York's newest additions will both play a pivotal role in the team's 1969 World Championship season.
1980 Dave Winfield (.276, 20, 87) becomes the highest-paid player in the history of sports, when he agrees to a ten-year free-agent deal with the Yankees worth a record $16 million. After announcing the former Padres outfielder's deal, team owner George Steinbrenner tells 34 year-old Reggie Jackson (.300, 41, 111) who had been asked his opinion about the acquisition by The Boss and had heartily endorsed the signing, he will will not be offered an extended contract when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season because of his age.
1981 The Yankees and Ron Guidry agree to a four-year, $3.6 million deal keeping the free agent in New York. During the span of the contract, 'Gator' will average nearly 17 wins a season.
