1913 Wearing White Sox uniforms, the Reds are defeated by the Cubs, 7-2, at Chicago's West Side Park. Cincinnati forgot to pack uniforms and had to don those worn by their opponents' crosstown rivals.
1924 Future Yankee starter, schoolboy Bump Hadley throws a perfect game against the Hadley-Lynn team of Massachusetts. The Mercersburg Academy standout will strike out 26 of the 27 batters he faces.
1939 On a chilly Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, Lou Gehrig comes to the plate in the fourth inning and singles off Washington hurler Ken Chase for his 2,721st and last hit, the most ever in franchise history. The 'Iron Horse's' record will stand for over 70 years until Derek Jeter, another 35 year-old team captain, surpasses the mark in 2009.
1960 Stan Musial plays in his 1,000th game at first base, making him the first major leaguer to reach that milestone at two different positions. The Cardinals' legend has also played 1,513 games in the outfield for the Redbirds.
1962 Russ Snyder accomplishes the rare feat of getting two hits in one inning as a pinch hitter in the Orioles' 8-3 victory at Kansas City's Municipal Stadium. Leading off the top of the seventh, the Oriole outfielder, batting for Wes Stock, ties the score at 3-3 with a solo home run and he will add a two-out RBI single before the frame is finished.
1981 Philadelphia's Steve Carlton becomes the sixth major league pitcher to strike out 3,000 batters when he fans the Expos' Tim Wallach in the first inning en route to a 6-2 complete-game victory over Montreal at Veterans Stadium. The Phillies southpaw, known simply as 'Lefty', becomes the first left-handed hurler to accomplished the feat.
1983 After a 7-2 loss to L.A. at Wrigley Field, Cubs manager Lee Elia launches into an obscenity-laced tirade, that will become a much-reported media story on the airwaves and in print for days to come. The Chicago skipper's rant clearly shows his frustration with the team's fan base, "the (bleepers) don't even work. That's why they're out at the (bleeping) game. They oughtta go out and get a (bleeping) job and find out what it's like to go out and earn a (bleeping) living. Eighty-five percent of the (bleeping) world is working. The other 15 come out here. A (bleeping) playground for the (bleepers). Rip them (bleepers)! Rip them (bleeping) (bleepers) like the (bleeping) players!"
1986 Roger Clemens becomes the first major league hurler to strike out 20 batters in a nine-inning game when he fans Phil Bradley with two outs in the ninth in the Red Sox 3-1 victory over Seattle at Fenway Park. The previous mark of 19 had been shared by Steve Carlton (1969), Tom Seaver (1970), and Nolan Ryan (1974).
2006 The Bronx Bombers rout the Blue Jays, 17-4, becoming the sixth American League team to score in all eight innings the team comes up to bat. The only other time the Bronx Bombers score in every inning of a full game occurred in July of 1939 when they pummel the Browns at Yankee Stadium, 14-1.
2013 Brandon Moss' walk-off two-run homer in the 19th inning ends a six hour and 32 minute contest, the longest game by time in A's history. Oakland's 10-8 victory over Los Angeles features 5.1 innings of outstanding relief by Brett Anderson, who entered the game in the 13th frame after being scratched from his scheduled start to rest a sore right ankle.
2015 In a game that is closed to the public due to the civil unrest in Baltimore, resulting from the death of Freddie Gray, the Orioles beat the White Sox in an afternoon contest at a completely empty Camden Yards, 8-2. The first two games of this series were postponed and the scheduled weekend series against the Tampa Bay Rays is being shifted to St. Petersburg, Florida in an effort to save the much-needed law enforcement resources for the affected neighborhoods in the Charm City.

Dee Gordon has been suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball after the Miami Marlins second baseman tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug.
Gordon tested positive for exogenous Testosterone and Clostebol, MLB said in a release after the Marlins’ 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday night.
The fleet-footed Gordon won the National League batting title by hitting .333 last season and signed a $50 million, 5-year deal with Miami in January. He’s made two All-Star teams in his six seasons and won the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards at second base last year.

MLB Plus Free Game.

ArtemyBerstenev,
HOF. business, nothin' personal! and now, he is laughing all the way to the bank! sad!

1903 The Highlanders (to be renamed the Yankees) beat Washington, 6-2, in the first game ever played at Hilltop Park. The fourth-place club will compile a remarkable 41-26 record at home in their inaugural season in New York.
1939 At Yankee Stadium, Lou Gehrig's streak and career come to end as the 'Iron Horse' plays his final game, going 0-for-4 against in a 3-2 loss to the Senators. The ailing Yankees first baseman, who only has four hits this season, played in 2,130 consecutive games and compiled a .340 batting average with 490 home runs during his 17 Hall of Fame seasons with the Yankees.
1944 In the first game of a doubleheader split, first baseman Phil Weintraub gets 11 RBIs, and player-manager Mel Ott scores six runs, drawing five walks in the Giants' 26-8 rout of the Dodgers. Brooklyn wins the nightcap 5-4 in a game shortened due to darkness.
1946 In the game he considers his biggest thrill in baseball, Indian hurler Bob Feller, striking out 11 batters, throws his second career no-hitter, edging the Yankees at the Stadium, 1-0. Frankie Hayes' home run in the top of the ninth inning proves to be the difference.
1952 In his final at-bat before leaving to fight in the Korean War, Ted Williams hits a game-winning, two-run home run to beat Dizzy Trout and the Tigers, 5-3. Fittingly, the Fenway faithful was there to celebrate Ted Williams' Day.
1958 Ted Williams collects his 1,000th extra-base hits when he homers off Ned Garver in the ninth inning in Boston's 11-4 loss to Kansas City at Fenway Park. The 'Spendid Splinter' is the tenth major leaguer to accomplished the feat.
1967 The Tigers are no-hit by Oriole pitchers Steve Barber and Stu Miller, but still manage to win the game, 2-1. An error by Baltimore's shortstop Mark Belanger allows the eventual winning run to score in the top of the ninth inning.
1988 Dave Winfield ties the major league RBI record for April established by Dodger infielder Ron Cey in 1977 and matched by Dale Murphy of the Braves in 1985. The right fielder, who was on base at least once in every game, drives in his 28th and 29th runs of the month in the Yankees' 15-3 rout of Texas in New York.
1989 The Blue Jays trade Jesse Barfield to the Yankees for southpaw Al Leiter. The slugging right fielder, who led the league with 40 homers in 1986, will bat only .231 with 62 dingers in his four years with New York, and Toronto's new left-hander will compile a 26-24 record during his seven years north of the border.
1996 In the Pirates' 10-7 victory over Cincinnati at Riverfront Stadium, Jeff King hit two homers in one inning for the second time in his career. The Pittsburgh first baseman joins Andre Dawson and Willie McCovey as the only major leaguers to have accomplished the rare feat twice.
1999 During a game against the Yankees, a group of Kansas City Royals fans, frustrated with the economic disparity in baseball, throw fake dollar bills onto the field, and turn away from the field each time the opponents take their at-bats. The Kauffman Stadium faithful, carrying signs which clearly blame the problem on the Bronx Bombers, walkout en masse after the fifth inning.
2002 Al Leiter becomes the first pitcher in baseball history to record wins over all thirty big league franchises that have been existence since 1901. The Mets southpaw earns the victory as New York routs the Diamondbacks at Bank One Ballpark, 10-1.
2005 The players are asked by Bud Selig to agree to a 50-game suspension for the first offense, 100-game suspension for the second offense and a lifelong ban after the third offense for the use of steroids. In addition to the harsher three-strike rule, the commissioner also is seeking a ban on amphetamines.
2010 With more than twenty-five percent of its membership born outside of the United States, the Major League Baseball players’ union issues a statement condemning Arizona's new law that requires proof of identity be shown to any state or local official who is suspicious of a person's immigration status. Michael Weiner, the head of the MLBPA, said the organization would consider “additional steps” if the edict is not repealed or modified.
2010 Mariano Rivera ties Eric Gagne’s major league mark when he gets his 51st consecutive save at home, working a perfect ninth inning in the Yankees' 6-4 victory over Chicago. The Panamanian closer also fans two batters to move ahead of Roger Clemens for 10th on the team’s all-time strikeout list with 1,015.
2012 When Brett Myers faces his first batter in the ninth inning, the Astros closer becomes the seventh different Houston pitcher to face seven consecutive Mets, a major league first. Houston manager Brad Mills wears out a path from the dugout to the mound when he pulls starter Bud Norris from the game and then proceeds to summon Wilton Lopez, Wesley Wright, Brandon Lyon, Fernando Abad and Fernando Rodriguez to face one batter each in the team's 4-3 victory at Citi Field.

1879 At Cleveland's Kennard Street Park, the newly transplanted Blues, who played in Indianapolis last season, lose their season opener to the Providence Grays, 15-4. The game makes the managerial debut of 23 year-old right-hander Jim McCormick, the youngest skipper in major league history.
1883 The Giants, then known as the Gothams, play their first game in franchise history, defeating Boston, 7 to 5, at the Southeast Diamond at the Polo Grounds in New York. The newcomer in the National League will finish the season with a record of 46-50, 16 games behind today’s opponent, the league-leading Beaneaters.
1920 Babe Ruth hits his 50th career home run, the first of the 659 round-trippers he will hit as a Yankee. The New York right fielder also collects a double in the team's 6-0 victory over Boston at the Polo Grounds, the ballpark they share with the National League's Giants.
1926 Chattanooga right-hander Satchel Paige makes his professional pitching debut, blanking the New Orleans Algiers, 1-0. The Black Lookouts rookie gives up only two hits in the Negro Southern League contest.
1951 In an 8-3 loss to the Yankees at Comiskey Park, White Sox hurler Randy Gumpert gives up the first of Mickey Mantle's 536 major league home runs. The Mother’s Day blast, which will be worth $165,000 at Sotheby’s auction in 2004, is inscribed on by the future Hall of Famer's own hand which includes the following detail on the ball, "My first H.R. in the Majors, May 1, 1951, 4:50 p.m. Chicago" as well as "6th inning off Randy Gumpert."
1951 Becoming the first black to play for the White Sox, Minnie Minoso makes his debut, hitting a home run against the Yankees' Vic Raschi in his first plate appearance for the club. The speedy outfielder, who previously played with the Cleveland Indians, bats .326 (173 hits) and leads the league in stolen bases and triples, but loses out to Yankee infielder Gil McDougald for Rookie of the Year Award honors.
1959 At Chicago’s Comiskey Park, White Sox hurler Early Wynn throws a one-hitter while striking out 14 Boston batters. It is the 39 year-old pitcher’s eighth inning lead-off home run which beats the Red Sox, 1-0.
1973 One out from defeat, the Giants score seven runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Pirates at Candlestick Park, 8-7. Three batters after Chris Arnold pinch-hits a two-out grand slam, Bobby Bonds delivers a walk-off three-run double to left field to complete San Francisco's amazing come-from-behind victory.
1980 The Mets are fined by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn as the result of disparaging remarks made against the Yankees by Jerry Della Femina, the president of the team’s advertising agency. The high-powered ad man, who is being paid $400,000 to develop a campaign to bolster the sagging attendance at Shea Stadium, made sarcastic comments about cross-town rival players Reggie Jackson and Bucky Dent, and was quoted to say their Bronx ballpark was in an unsafe neighborhood.
1984 Dwight Gooden becomes the first teenager to strike out at least ten players since Bert Blyleven accomplished the feat in 1970. The Mets' 19 year-old phenom, who will set a rookie record with 276 Ks, will have a total of 15 double-digit strikeout games this year.
1985 Jimmy Key becomes the first left-handed starter in more than four years to win a game for the Blue Jays when Toronto beats California, 6-3. Paul Mirabella, who beat Boston on the final day of the season in 1980, was the last southpaw starter during the past 614 games to get a victory for Toronto.
1991 Rangers right-hander Nolan Ryan pitches the seventh no-hitter of his career when he defeats the Blue Jays at Arlington Stadium, 3-0. The 44 year-old Texan fireballer, who strikes out 16 batters, becomes the oldest major leaguer ever to throw a no-hit game.
1996 With his 6-for-8 performance in an 11-6 extra inning victory over the Orioles at Camden Yards, Bernie Williams becomes only the second Yankee in franchise history to collect six hits in a game. Myril Hoag had accomplished the feat for the Bronx Bombers at Fenway Park in 1934.
2000 San Francisco's left fielder Barry Bonds becomes the first player to hit a ball into San Francisco Bay aka McCovey's Cove. The first 'splashdown' home run at Pacific Bell Park helps the Giants to beat the Mets, 10-3.
2004 Barry Bonds, in the Giants' 6-3 victory over Florida at Pac Bell Park, sets a major league record by being walked four times intentionally in a nine-inning game. In 1990, Cubs' outfielder Andre Dawson was given five intentional passes in a 16-inning contest against the Reds.
2006 With a police escort from the airport, Doug Mirabelli, changing into his uniform in the car, arrives at Fenway Park 13 minutes before the game time. The Red Sox reacquired the popular backstop from the Padres earlier in the day to continue his familiar role as personal catcher to knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, tonight's starting pitcher against the Yankees.
2011 The Phillies fans attending the ESPN Sunday Night Game against the Mets start chanting of “USA, USA” when word spreads of the death of Osama Bin Laden. The reaction of the sellout crowd comes as a surprise to the players on the field, who are unaware of the historic event.
2012 With the final payment received on the record $2.15-billion purchase price, Frank McCourt's turbulent era of the Dodger ownership comes to an end. The team's new ownership group, fronted by Magic Johnson and incoming club president Stan Kasten, includes Mark Walter, chief executive of the Chicago-based Guggenheim Financial, who arranged the financing and holds a controlling interest in the franchise.

1917 At Wrigley Field, southpaw Hippo Vaughn of Chicago and Reds righty Fred Toney throw no-hitters against one another through the first nine innings. The deadlock is broken in the top of the tenth with a one-out single by Larry Kopf, an error and an infield hit by Jim Thorpe, and Toney then sets the Cubs down in order to preserve his extra inning gem.
1923 Senator right-hander Walter Johnson tosses his 100th career shutout when he blanks the Yankees at Griffith Stadium, 3-0. During his 21-year career, the 'Big Train' will establish a major league record, whitewashing the opponents 110 times.
1928 With the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning, Giants' manager John McGraw orders that Dodger rookie Del Bissonette be intentionally walked with the bases loaded by Larry Benton, forcing home a run. The strategy works when Harry Riconda strikes out, giving New York a 2-1 victory in the Polo Grounds contest.
1930 Joe Sewell’s consecutive streak ends at 1,103 games when he doesn't appear in a game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park due to having a fever of 102 degrees. The Indians shortstop, who hasn't missed a game since 1922, is only 204 games shy of the all-time record of 1,307 games set in 1925 by Yankee shortstop Everett Scott.
1939 Prior to a game with the Tigers in Detroit, Lou Gehrig tells his manager, Joe McCarthy, that he is benching himself "for the good of the team". The Yankee legend's record streak, which began in 1925, ends at 2,130 consecutive games.
1951 As a pinch hitter, Lou Limmer goes deep off Tigers' right-hander Saul Rogovin in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 3-3, in the A's eventual 5-3 extra inning loss at Briggs Stadium. The at bat marks the first time in major league history that a Jewish batter faces a Jewish pitcher with a Jewish catcher (Joe Ginsberg) behind the plate.
1968 Mets hitter Bud Harrelson becomes the first batter in baseball history to gain a 3-0 ball-strike count advantage from the on-deck circle when umpire Ed Vargo penalizes Phillies reliever John Boozer for going to his mouth inside the 18-foot circle of the mound. Philadelphia manager Gene Mauch, incensed about the ball one call, orders his pitcher to do it again for ball two, and then again for ball three, which promptly gets his right-hander and himself thrown out of the game, a 3-0 loss to New York at Shea Stadium.
1994 Changing their jersey color from white to blue in an effort to snap a losing skid doesn't work when the Cubs lose their record eleventh consecutive game. Chicago is limited to two hits by John Smiley in the Reds' rout at Wrigley Field, 9-0.
1998 Darryl Strawberry blasts the first of his two pinch-hit ninth-inning grand slams this season. The Kauffman Stadium shot, hit off Scott Service, extends the Yankees' lead over Kansas City to 12-6.
1999 Rafael Palmeiro reaches the 2,000 career hit milestone as the Rangers defeat Cleveland, 8-6. The 34 year-old designated hitter will join Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Eddie Murray as the only players to compile 3,000 hits and 500 home runs during their major league careers.
2001 At the Metrodome, Paul O'Neill singles in the ninth inning off Minnesota reliever LaTroy Hawkins, becoming the 215th player to record 2,000 hits. The Yankee right fielder, who will retire at the end of the season, will collect another 105 hits before ending his 17-year major league career.
2002 Just missing hitting his fifth homer in the 15-4 victory over the White Sox, Mariners outfielder Mike Cameron becomes the 13th major leaguer to hit four homers in one game. The first two dingers were followed by round trippers by second baseman Bret Boone, making it the first time the same two teammates have hit back-to-back homers twice in one inning.

1936 After being sidelined at the start of the season because of a foot injury, Joe DiMaggio makes his much anticipated major league debut. 1947 In a controversial move, Branch Rickey trades five Dodgers, including southerner Kirby Higby, to the Pirates for five-foot, six-inch left-hand-hitting outfielder Al Gionfriddo and $100,000. Some believe 'the Mahatma' made the deal to send a message to the team about his commitment to breaking the color barrier and his support of Jackie Robinson, the first black to play in the major leagues this century.

1952 In an effort to fill the void in center field created by Joe DiMaggio’s retirement and Mickey Mantle’s recovery from last season’s knee surgery, the Yankees trade Jackie Jensen and right-hander Spec Shea to the Senators for veteran fly chaser Irv Noren. In 1958, Jensen will win the American League MVP playing for Boston.
1962 In a deal with the Indians, the Senators trade light-hitting outfielder Willie Tasby for southpaws Don Rudolph and Steve Hamilton. At the start of next season, Washington will obtain Jim Coates from the Yankees in exchange for Hamilton, who will go on to post a 34-20 (.630) record during his eight-year tenure with the Bronx Bombers.
1975 The Reds beat the Braves at Riverfront Stadium, 6-1, making Gary Nolan a winner for the first time in nearly two and half seasons. The right-hander's last win came on October 3, 1972 when he beat the Astros by an identical score in Cincinnati.
1979 In a 6-1 defeat to the Brewers, Indian outfielder Bobby Bonds hits his 300th home run off Moose Haas to become only the second player in major league history to steal at least 300 bases (413) and hit 300 round trippers. Willie Mays was the first to accomplish the feat. (July 4, 1961).

2014 The Mets set the record for the longest hitless streak by a major league pitching staff to start a season when Jenrry Mejia grounds out to second, making the New York hurlers, collectively, 0-for-46 since Opening Day. The dubious mark, previously established by the 1914 St. Louis Browns, will be extended to 64 at bats before Jacob deGrom, in his first major league at bat, singles off Yankee right-hander Chase Whitley.

1903 In the first game of what will become one of baseball's fiercest rivalries, the Pilgrims beat the Highlanders at Boston's Huntington Avenue Grounds, 6-2. The teams will change their names, but the intense competition between the Red Sox and Yankees will become legendary.
1917 Red Sox left-hander Babe Ruth outduels Walter Johnson in the team’s 1-0 victory over the Senators at Griffith Stadium. The game’s lone run scores on an eighth-inning sacrifice fly hit by the Boston southpaw, who will turn out to be a fairly good hitter.
1925 Pirates' shortstop Glenn Wright catches Jim Bottomley's line drive, doubles up Jimmy Cooney at second, and tags Rogers Hornsby coming from first to complete an unassisted triple play in a 10-9 loss to the Cardinals.
1957 Vic Power becomes the first modern major leaguer to hit both a leadoff and walkoff home run in the same game. The A's first baseman, who went deep off Hal Brown leading off the game, ends the contest in the 10th frame with a round-tripper off the right-hander, giving Kansas City a 3-2 victory over Baltimore.
1959 At the Los Angeles Coliseum, the Yankees defeat the Dodgers, 6-2, in an exhibition game played to benefit Roy Campanella, who was paralyzed in an auto accident prior to the team moving to the West Coast in 1958. The game, which draws the largest crowd ever for a baseball game, 93,103 fans with another estimated 15,000 turned away from the sellout, begins with an emotional ceremony in which Pee Wee Reese pushes the wheelchair-bound catcher into the darkened stadium that is totally illuminated by fans holding candles or matches.
1966 Twenty games into his second year as the Yankee skipper, Johnny Keane is fired by general manager Ralph Houk, who will return to the dugout to manage the team. After only four victories in the first 20 games, New York wins 13 of its next 17 games after the managerial change.
1998 At the Kingdome, the Mariners tie a major league record set by the 1994 Phillies when they leave 16 men stranded on the bases without scoring. The Blue Jays take advantage of their opponent's lack of timely hitting and beat Seattle, 6-0.
1999 Yankees right-hander Hideki Irabu opposes Mariner Matt Suzuki, also a righty, in the first match up of Japanese starters in major league history. The Bronx Bomber hurler bests his fellow countryman, giving up four hits and a run in New York's 10-1 victory over Seattle.
2003 A man wanted by the police on drug and parole-violations is apprehended at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. The 24 year-old Westwood man's cover was blown when his parole officer saw him kissing his girlfriend on the stadium's scoreboard during Kiss Cam.
2006 With an 8-5 victory over the Rangers, Joe Torre joins Joe McCarthy (1,460), Casey Stengel (1,149), and Miller Huggins (1,067) as the fourth Yankee manager to win 1000 games. The Bronx Bomber skipper has compiled a 1,000-645 record during his 11-year tenure with the team.
2006 When Barry Bonds takes up his position in left field, the Phillies fans in the stands behind him unfurl a section-long banner which leaves no doubt about their sentiments concerning the Giants outfielder's pursuit of the Babe. The message displayed briefly during the first inning informs the unpopular superstar "Ruth did it on hot dogs & Beer - Aaron did it with class".
2010 Starlin Castro, the first major leaguer to be born in the 1990's, becomes the sixth Cub in franchise history to hit a home run in his first big league at bat, going deep off Homer Bailey in Chicago's 14-7 win over Cincinnati at Great American Ball Park. The 20 year-old rookie shortstop also becomes the first player to compile six RBIs in his first game in the majors when he delivers a bases-loaded triple in addition to his second inning three-run blast to deep right field.
2014 Adrian Beltre becomes the fifth player in major league history to hit 100 home runs for three different teams when he goes deep in the Rangers' 9-2 loss to Colorado at Globe Life Park in Arlington. The 35 year-old third baseman, who joins Alex Rodriguez, Jim Thome, Darrell Johnson, and Reggie Jackson in accomplishing the feat, hit 147 homers for the Dodgers (1998-2004) and 103 with the Mariners (2005-09).

1926 A three-alarm blaze burns down Fenway's grandstand roof and left field bleachers. The Red Sox, desperately in need of cash, use most of the insurance proceeds to pay for operations and leave a vacant lot where the bleachers once stood.
1948 The Senators snap a 36-inning scoreless streak, tallying a run in the final frame of their 6-1 loss to Cleveland at Griffith Stadium. Washington is spared being shutout for the fourth consecutive game when Tribe starter Gene Bearden issues four walks to force in a run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
1961 The New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc. announces the New York National League franchise's team nickname will be the Mets. Other names considered included the Avengers, Burros (a play on the word boroughs), Continentals, Islanders, Jets, Rebels, Skyliners, and the Meadowlarks, which was the first choice of owner Joan Payson.
1968 Jim Catfish Hunter hurls the first American League perfect game in forty-six years when the A's defeat the usually heavy-hitting Twins, 4-0, in front of only 6,298 Oakland fans. The last Junior Circuit hurler to retire 27 consecutive batters in a regular season game was White Sox right-hander Charlie Robertson, who accomplished the feat against Detroit in 1922.
1971 Willie Mays (634) and Hank Aaron (604) both hit round-trippers in the Braves' 5-2 victory over the Giants at Candlestick Park. It is the first time in baseball history two players with 600 career homers go deep in the same game.

1973 After Cubs skipper Whitey Lockman is ejected in the 11th inning of a Jack Murphy Stadium contest, Ernie Banks takes his place for the last few innings of the Cubs' 3-2‚ 12-inning victory over the Padres. The coach technically becomes the first black to ever manage a major league team.
1992 Astro southpaw Butch Henry becomes the first player to stroke an inside-the-park home run for his first hit in the major leagues when his sinking line drive gets past left fielder Barry Bonds. The historic three-run homer, which is given up by Doug Drabek of the Pirates, will be the only round-tripper the Houston hurler will ever hit during his seven-year career.
1998 Cardinal Mark McGwire reaches the 400th career home run mark. Big Red's historic milestone comes in 4,727 at-bats (127 fewer at-bats than Babe Ruth), which is the fewest plate appearances ever needed to reach the mark.
2009 At Camden Yards, Alex Rodriguez takes no time in making his return to the Yankees lineup felt, blasting a three-run home run on the very first pitch he has seen this season. The third baseman's Ruthian blast, which comes off a 98-mph fastball thrown by Baltimore's right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, helps to snap the Yankees' five-game losing streak when they beat the Orioles, 4-0.
2011 Mike Scioscia becomes the 23rd manager in major league history to reach 1,000 victories with one team when the Angels beat Cleveland at the Big A, 6-5. 2012 Josh Hamilton becomes the 16th major leaguer to hit four home runs in one game when he blasts an 0-2 pitch over the Camden Yards centerfield fence in the eighth inning of the Rangers' 10-3 victory over Baltimore. The Texas outfielder, who connected each time with a man on base, also hits a double to set the American League’s single-game record for total bases with 18, one shy of Shawn Green's major league mark of 19 established in 2002 with the Dodgers.

1943 Due to poor grade of rubber cement used to make baseballs because of wartime rubber shortages, a different type of baseball is put into play today, with dramatic results. In eight games, six home runs are hit, compared to a total of nine homers tallied in the season's first 72 games.
1947 After leading his team in verbally abusing Jackie Robinson with racial slurs during yesterday’s game at Shibe Park, Philadelphia manager Ben Chapman, who admits he had been 'kinda loud', sends word to the Brooklyn clubhouse that he would like to make amends by posing with the Dodger first baseman for the newspaper photographers. The orchestrated gesture, which Robinson agrees to, admitting later that is one of the hardest things he ever had to make himself do, is prompted by the bad press created by the Phillies manager’s intolerance and the wrath of Commissioner Chandler.

Tom Seaver, who will also start and pitch 8.1 innings in the nightcap, gets the win pitching one inning of relief.

2001 Although the deed will not be officially recognized as tying a record because the game against the Reds goes extra innings, Diamondback southpaw fireballer Randy Johnson joins Roger Clemens and Kerry Wood as the only pitchers ever to strike out 20 hitters over nine innings. After being pulled in the ninth, the three-time Cy Young Award winner does not get an opportunity to break Tom Cheney's major league mark of 21 strikeouts recorded by the 27 year-old Senator right-hander in a 16-inning contest on September 12, 1962 against the Orioles.

In attendance for the 26 year-old left-hander's Mother's Day gem is his grandmother, who raised him after his mom died of a melanoma during his senior year at Stagg High School in Stockton, California.

1909 Church bells are rung when Fred Toney completes the longest no-hitter in organized baseball history, a 1–0 victory over the Lexington Colts of the Blue Grass League. As word spread around town about the Class D Winchester Hustlers right-hander's performance on the mound, fans continued to stream into the ballpark before the lone run of the contest scored on a squeeze play in the bottom of the 17th.
1910 Bill Purtell gets the dubious distinction of becoming the first player in major league history to strike out two times in the same frame. During the sixth inning of the White Sox' 10-3 victory over Washington, the Chicago third baseman is victimized twice by future Hall of Famer Walter Johnson.
1934 In an 11-3 rout over the White Sox at Comiskey Park, Lou Gehrig ties a big league record, stroking four extra-base hits, which includes two doubles and two home runs. The Yankee first baseman accumulates the 12 total bases and seven RBIs in just five innings when he benches himself due to a severe cold.
1953 With a double and home run, Roy Campanella drives in all the runs in the Dodgers' 5-0 victory over the Phillies at Ebbets Field. Campy's total of 40+ RBIs in the first 30 games will not be matched until Tino Martinez accomplishes the feat in 1997 with the Yankees.
1967 Braves' outfielder Hank Aaron hits an inside-the-park homer off Phillie hurler Jim Bunning. It will be 'Hammerin' Hank's' only home run which doesn't clear the fence out of his record setting 755 round-trippers.
1970 Hoyt Wilhelm becomes the first major league pitcher to appear in 1000 games. The 47 year-old Braves' knuckleballer will end his 21-year career in 1972 with 1070 appearances.
1999 In a 12-4 rout of the Mariners, Nomar Garciaparra hits two grand slams in the same game and adds a two-run homer as well. The Red Sox shortstop becomes the first American League player to drive in 10 runs in a game since 1975.
2006 At Safeco Field, the Devil Rays beat the Mariners, 1-0, with the lone run being scored as the result of a fifth-inning balk committed by Jamie Moyer. The Seattle southpaw's body sways when he tries to adjust his grip on the ball without removing his foot from the rubber, allowing Toby Hall to cross the plate on the miscue.
2008 With the Padres' 3-2 victory over the Rockies at Petco Park, Greg Maddux, on his fifth attempt, wins the 350th game of his career. The 42 year-old right-hander gives up three hits in six innings to become the ninth pitcher in major league history to reach the milestone, and only the third hurler along with Warren Spahn and Roger Clemens to accomplish the feat since 1928.
2012 At Camden Yards, the Orioles start the game with back-to-back-to-back home runs when Ryan Flaherty, J.J. Hardy, and Nick Markakis give the team a 3-0 lead on the first eight pitches thrown by Rangers starter Colby Lewis. The Birds' trio of round-trippers to lead off the first inning marks the fourth time in major league history the feat has been accomplished, but it is the first occurrence in the American League.
2015 On Mother's Day, 29 year-old Felix Hernandez becomes the fourth youngest player to strike out 2,000 batters when he whiffs A’s outfielder Sam Fuld in the Mariner’s 4-3 victory at Safeco Field.
