1907 After the Giants' 3-0 loss to the Cubs that drops New York out of first place, the players need to form a protective ring around umpires Hank O'Day and Bob Emslie. Pinkerton guards fire shots in the air, trying to disperse unruly fans who have spilled onto the field at the Polo Grounds.

1927 For the second consecutive day, an umpire at Ebbets Field is the target of fan abuse. Arbitrator Frank Wilson needs a police escort after the Robins (Dodgers) drop a twin bill to Cubs.

1930 After hitting three consecutive home runs, his first three-homer performance in a regular season game, Babe Ruth decides to bat from the opposite side (right-handed) in the ninth inning. After two quick strikes, the 35 year-old 'Sultan of Swat' crosses the plate to bat lefty, but A's hurler Jack Quinn still strikes out the Bambino in Philadelphia's 15-7 rout of the Yankees at Shibe Park.

1947 Joe DiMaggio is slapped with a $100 fine, along with four teammates who penalized to a lesser degree, by Yankee GM Lee MacPlail for not fulfilling contract requirements to do promotional duties for the team. The New York outfielder had reneged on a promise to pose for a Signal Corps photograph featuring soldiers wearing new Army uniforms.

1952 The Dodgers score a major league record fifteen first inning runs en route to a 19-1 victory over the Reds at Ebbets Field. After retiring the first batter, the next 19 Brooklyn batters reached base (10 hits, 7 BB & 2 HBP). Captain Pee Wee Reese reaches first base three times in the inning.

1957 Reaffirming their decision to bar females from the Fenway Park's male-only press box, Boston baseball writers deny a seat to Doris O'Donnell, a feature writer following the Indians.

1992 Manager Buck Rodgers and eleven others are injured when the Angels' team bus goes out of control on the New Jersey Turnpike and crashes into trees. The 53 year-old skipper is seriously injured and will miss nearly 90 games.

2004 In his return to Texas, Alex Rodriguez is roundly booed by the patrons at the Ballpark in Arlington. The fans continue to show their displeasure when the Yankees' third baseman drives a 2-1 pitch over the fence during his first inning at-bat.

2005 When Dae-Sung Koo bats against Randy Johnson, Mike Piazza confides to David Wright in the dugout, "If he gets a hit, I'll donate a million dollars to charity." The Korean reliever, batting lefty off the Yankee fire-balling southpaw, who was afraid to stand in the batter's box in a previous game, promptly hits a 91-mph fastball to the wall in center for a double, causing the Mets catcher to remark he'll be making a significant donation to a charity over the next 20 years.

2012 Rockies starter Jamie Moyer extends his major league record when he makes his debut at the newly opened Marlins Park, having now pitched in 50 major league ballparks. The 49 year-old southpaw started his career with a victory for Philadelphia at Wrigley Field in 1986.

2013 Mike Trout becomes the youngest player in American League history to hit for the cycle when he goes 4-for-5 in the Angels' 12-0 rout of the Mariners. The 21 year-old 'Millville Meteor' beats out an infield single in the third, triples in the fourth, doubles in the sixth and goes deep in the eighth, becoming the sixth player in franchise history to accomplish the feat.

1922 The Yankees, who have been sharing the Polo Grounds with the Giants since 1913, begin construction on their own ballpark in the Bronx. The stadium will become known as the 'House that Ruth Built', acknowledging the Babe's popularity and influence.

1930 Babe Ruth ties a major league record by hitting five homers in two games and six homers in three games when he hit three homers in the second game of yesterday's doubleheader, two more in the opener of today's twin bill, adding one more in the nightcap. Teammate Lou Gehrig also goes deep three times in the second game of the doubleheader, a 20-13 Yankee victory over the A's at Philadelphia's Shibe Park.

1933 Yankee third baseman Joe Sewell is struck out for the first time this season, a victim of Cleveland's Wes Ferrell. The 34 year-old infielder, playing in his final season, will strike out only three more times in 524 at-bats.

1942 Ted Williams is sworn into the U.S. Navy, but will remain with the Red Sox until he is called for active duty. Earlier in the year, a public outcry occurred when the Boston outfielder asked to be reclassified from Class 1-A to 3-A, due to being the sole support of his mother, causing the Quaker Oats Company to drop him from their ads.

1962 Roger Maris is intentionally walked four times to establish a major league record. The quartet of free passes is issued by four different Halo hurlers in New York's' 2-1 victory over the Angels in 12 innings at Yankee Stadium.

1963 Mickey Mantle once again just barely misses becoming the first player to hit a home run out of Yankee Stadium. The monstrous walk-off blast off A’s hurler Bill Fischer, which gives the Yankees an 8-7 victory, hits just a few feet below the decorative faзade down the right-field line.

1977 In a 14-10 Boston victory at Fenway Park, the Red Sox (6) and Brewers (5) combined for 11 home runs to tie a major league record. The round-tripper riot matches the mark set by the Yankees and Tigers in 1950 and equaled by the Cubs and Mets in 1967.

1982 In his last major league at bat, Mario Mendoza, who will become a minor league hitting instructor, reaches first on a fielder’s choice, ending his nine-year career with a .215 batting average. The Ranger infielder’s name will become infamous as players struggling at the plate will be described as performing below the ‘Mendoza Line’.

1998 The Mets trade Preston Wilson, Geoff Goetz and Ed Yarnell to the Marlins for Mike Piazza. Florida had acquired the All-Star catcher last week from the Dodgers along with Todd Zeille in exchange for Gary Sheffield, Bobby Bonilla, Charles Johnson, Jim Eisenreich, and Manuel Barrios.

1999 After a stint on the disabled list and a rain out, Yankees' right-hander Roger Clemens finally breaks the American League record for consecutive victories with 18, previously shared by Johnny Allen (Indians, 1936-37) and Dave McNally (Orioles, 1968-69). The somewhat anticlimactic accomplishment includes ten no-decisions.

2001 For the second time this season, Barry Bonds homers in six consecutive games. His nine homers during this span establish a National League mark. Senators' slugger Frank Howard's 1968 feat of hitting 10 homers in six games is the major league record.

:be: 2002 In what appears to be a lopsided trade, the A's trade a stunned Jeremy Giambi (.274, 8, 17) to Philadelphia in exchange for pinch hitter John Mabry (.286, 0, 3). The Oakland outfielder is also four years younger than the Phillies' utility man, but he doesn't meet the 'Moneyball' approach preached by GM Billy Beane.

2003 Arturo Moreno purchases the World Champion Angels from Walt Disney for $184 million to become the third owner in the 43-year history of the franchise. The 56 year-old outdoor advertising tycoon, a fourth-generation Mexican-American, is the first Hispanic to have a controlling interest in a major league club

:be: 1901 Scoring nine runs in the bottom of the ninth at Cleveland’s League Park, the Blues, later to be known as the Indians, stun the Senators, 14-13. The amazing comeback, which consists of six singles, two doubles, a walk, a hit batsman, and a passed ball, comes after two outs are made.

1924 Senator right-hander Walter Johnson strikes out 14, including six consecutive batters to tie an AL mark, en route to tossing a 4-0 one-hitter over Chicago. A fourth inning single by Harry Hooper spoils the 'Big Train's' bid for his second career no-hitter.

1935 The first-ever scheduled major league night game is rained out in Cincinnati, but the team will face the Phillies tomorrow night. The Reds will play eight evening contests this season, including one against every club in the National League.

1936 With the Reds trailing by three runs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning at Crosley Field, Sammy Byrd hits Cy Blanton's pitch for a game-ending home run, giving Cincinnati an incredible come-from-behind 4-3 victory. The 29 year-old outfielder becomes the third major leaguer to hit a walk-off grand slam, which is a homer that comes in the home team's final at-bat and erases a three-run deficit, resulting in a one-run victory.

1948 Yankees' slugger Joe DiMaggio hits three consecutive home runs, the first two off future Hall of Famer Bob Feller. The trio of round-trippers helps the Bronx Bombers defeat the Tribe, 6-5.

1962 Joe Pepitone homers twice to become the second player in Yankee history to hit two home runs in the same inning when the Bronx Bombers score nine times in the eighth inning of a 13-7 rout of Kansas City. In 1936 as a rookie, Joe DiMaggio became the first pinstriper to accomplish the feat.

 1965 Mets' outfielder Ron Swoboda takes up his position wearing a batting helmet - on his foot. After kicking the protective head gear, which gets stuck on his spikes, manager Casey Stengel ordered the young player to go out to the field.

:be: 1965 In the first inning of a 5-2 loss to San Francisco, Jimmy Wynn is unable to catch Jim Ray Hart's two-out routine fly ball when the ball is lost in the glare of diffused Texas sunlight streaming through plastic panes of the newly-opened Astrodome. The play, now a base-clearing inside-the-park three-run home run instead of an easy third out, results in the painting of the ballpark's ceiling the next day and will lead to the use of Astroturf next season, because grass will be unable to be grown due to the reduced amount of sunlight.

1984 The Tigers win their 16th consecutive road game, defeating the Angels, 4-2. Detroit's victory ties an American League record established by the Senators in 1912.

1991 Kirby Puckett strokes five singles and a triple in the Twins' 10-6 loss to Texas at the Metrodome. It is the second time the outfielder has collected six hits in a game, making him the first major leaguer to have accomplished the feat twice.

1998 David Wells extends his American League record consecutive outs streak to 38 when Boston leadoff hitter Darren Lewis grounds out to start the game. The Yankee southpaw, who authored a perfect game in his last start, had also retired the final ten Kansas City batters he faced in the start prior to the 'perfecto'.

2000 Mariners' outfielder Rickey Henderson draws his 2,000th career walk, becoming only the third player in baseball history to reach the milestone. Hall of Famers Babe Ruth and Ted Williams are the only other major leaguers to have accomplished the feat.

2002 Shawn Green hits four home runs in one game to become the 14th player in major league history, the second this month, to accomplish the feat. The Dodger right fielder's 6-for-6 performance in Milwaukee's Miller Park, which also includes a single and double, breaks Joe Adcock's 1954 mark for total bases by one, with a total of 19.

2004 Surpassing Tommy Agee’s 1969 team record, shortstop Kaz Matsui sets a franchise mark with his fifth lead-off home run of the season, becoming the first Mets player to hit lead-off homers in consecutive games. The 28 year-old Japanese native is also the first big leaguer to have his first five career round-trippers be hit batting first in the first inning of a game.

2011 In a profile piece written for The New Yorker magazine, Fred Wilpon makes some very candid comments about some of the 'stars' on his payroll. The embattled Mets owner is critical of the often injured Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran and calls David Wright a nice kid, but "not a superstar".

1936 At Shibe Park, second baseman Tony Lazzeri becomes the first major league player to hit two grand slams in the same game when the Yankees annihilate the A's, 25-2. The bases-full homers enable the future member of the Hall of Fame to establish a new American League record with 11 RBIs.

1940 The Browns host the first major league game played in St. Louis under the lights. A Friday evening crowd of 24,827, the largest attendance figure in 18 years, watches Bob Feller and the Indians beat the home team at Sportsman's Park, 3-2.

1941 'Big Poison' Paul Waner is signed by the Braves after being released by Brooklyn. The former Dodger joins his brother 'Little Poison' Lloyd on the Boston roster.

1956 In Detroit, Mickey Mantle goes 5-for-5 with an intentional walk in the Yankees' 11-5 victory over the Tigers. "The Commerce Comet's" offensive output includes a homer and four singles.

1957 On an off day at Fenway Park, Ted Williams, using his shotgun, shoots approximately 35 pigeons, sitting on a chair in front of the bullpen of the empty ballpark. The ‘Kid’s’ target practice predictably upsets the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, but Red Sox owner and avid sportsman Tom Yawkey’s participation in the ‘hunt’ helps to quell the outrage usually directed at the superstar ballplayer.

1964 The major league mark for shutouts in one day is broken as seven of the twenty major league teams do not cross home plate. The Twins, White Sox, Yankees, Mets, Phillies, Cardinals, and Pirates are all blanked.

1965 With glare of the sun shining through the roof making fly balls difficult to track during day games, the clear plastic panes of the Astrodome's ceiling are painted at a cost of $20,000. The decision to cover the roof, which reduces the ambient lighting by 40%, prevents the ballpark's natural grass from growing and will lead to the use of Astroturf next season.

1972 At Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, Don Rose homers on the first pitch he sees in his first major league at bat. The right-hander's third inning round-tripper, which will be his only career round tripper and the last hit by an American League hurler for thirty years, proves to be the difference in the Angels' 6-5 victory over the A's, earning the 25 year-old his only victory in the big leagues.

1986 A “drunk” Billy Martin is "fired" as the co-host of Saturday Night Live by executive producer Lorne Michaels after slurring his lines during a skit. In retaliation, the often-unemployed Yankee manager "sets fire" to his dressing room at the end of the show, which is the season finale.

1993 The Mets play their 5000th game in team history, losing to Philadelphia at Veterans Stadium, 6-3. Although New York has a record of 527 wins and 473 losses in its last thousand games, the franchise is still 338 games under .500 since playing its first contest in 1962.

1994 In a 13-6 Oriole win over Milwaukee at County Stadium, Cal Ripken hits his 300th career home run. The milestone round-tripper is a three-run shot to deep left field off Teddy Higuera in the third inning.

1995 Tossing a scoreless ninth inning in the A's 5-2 win over Baltimore, Dennis Eckersley records his 300th career save. The Oakland right-hander becomes the sixth reliever in major league history to reach the milestone.

2000 Mark McGwire becomes the fastest player to hit 20 home runs in one season, reaching the mark in 35 games. 'Big Mac' accomplishes the feat in six less contests than Mickey Mantle (1956) and his own record (1998).

:be: 2000 Sixteen Dodger players and three coaches are suspended by the commissioner's office for going into the stands during the Wrigley Field scuffle with fans on May 16. The suspensions totaling 60 games for players and 24 games for coaches is the harshest penalty ever handed down by major league baseball.

 2000 Ahead by seven runs after five innings of play at Enron Field, the hometown Astros find a way to lose to the Phillies, 9-7. Two days earlier, in Milwaukee, with a 9-2 advantage in the bottom of the ninth inning, Houston blew another seven-run lead in the eventual ten-inning, 10-9 loss to the Brewers at County Stadium.

2001 Cincinnati is finally shut out when Cubs' starter Jon Lieber one-hits the Reds on 79 pitches, 3-0. The span of 208 of games without being blanked establishes a new National League record, with the 1931-33 Yankees (308) and the 1978-79 Milwaukee Brewers (212) being the only teams with longer streaks.

2007 In his 1,000th major league game, Ichiro Suzuki goes 3-for-6, giving the Mariner outfielder a career total of 1,414 hits. Only Hall of Famer Al Simmons compiled more in a same span of games, collecting 1,443 from 1924-1931 for the Philadelphia A's.

1906 The Americans (Red Sox) halt a twenty-game losing streak, with 19 of the losses occurring at home, when Jesse Tannehill goes the distance, blanking Chicago at the Huntington Avenue Grounds, 3-0. Boston will finish the season in last place in the American League with a woeful 49-105 record.

:hi: 1910 In the nightcap of a twin bill in Chicago, Jack Coombs' scoreless streak ends at 53 innings during a 5-2 loss in a game shortened by darkness. The A's right-hander will throw 13 shutouts in 38 games he starts and will finish the season with a 31-9 record and an ERA of 1.30.

1922 After being called out for trying to stretch a single into double, Babe Ruth throws dirt the umpire’s eye, then goes after a heckler in the stands, and finishes his tirade by standing on the dugout roof calling the crowd “yellow” cowards. These actions will result in a one game suspension, a $200 fine, and will cost the 'Bambino' his Yankee captaincy, a position he has held for less than a week.

1923 Crossing the plate for the 1,741st time, Ty Cobb surpasses Honus Wagner's record for most runs scored in a career. The 'Georgia Peach' will tally 2,245 runs during his 24-year tenure in the major leagues, a mark which will not be equaled until 2001 when Rickey Henderson breaks the record.

1935 At Forbes Field, Boston Braves outfielder Babe Ruth hits three homers and a single in an 11-7 loss to the Pirates in Pittsburgh. The 'Sultan of Swat's' seventh-inning solo shot off Gary Bush, a blast which clears the ballpark's roof, will be the Bambino's 714th and final home run.

1951 At Shibe Park, the much-heralded Giant rookie Willie Mays makes his major league debut against the Phillies. The 20 year-old outfielder, who hit .477 in 35 games with the Minneapolis Millers before being called up, goes hitless in five trips to the plate, but makes two outstanding defensive plays to contribute to New York’s 8-5 victory.

1979 When Pirates left fielder Bill Robinson loses Joel Youngblood's ball in the Shea Stadium outfield mist, the umpires stop play. Due to the fog, the 11-inning contest ends after a 73-minute delay in a 3-3 tie.

1981 Joining Ty Cobb‚ Stan Musial‚ and Hank Aaron, Carl Yastrzemski becomes the fourth major leaguer to appear in 3‚000 games. Yaz makes it memorable by scoring the winning run in the Red Sox' 8-7 victory over Cleveland at Fenway Park.

1998 Cardinals first baseman Mark McGwire becomes the first player in major league history to hit 25 home runs before June 1. Ken Griffey Jr. is the only other player to hit 24 home runs before the start of the sixth month.

2002 With four homers on Thursday (5/23), one on Friday (5/24), and two more on Saturday (5/25), Shawn Green becomes the first major leaguer to hit seven round-trippers in three games. The Dodger outfielder's nine big flies in a week also breaks a National League record, established by Ralph Kiner with eight and tied by Ted Kluszewski and Nate Colbert.

2005 In a game against the Orioles, the Mariners battery consists of a pair of 42 year-olds as Jamie Moyer throws to backstop Pat Borders. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it marks the first time in major league history that two players 42 years or older have been the starting pitcher and catcher for a team.

2011 In the 12th inning of an eventual 7-6 loss to Florida, Giants catcher Buster Posey is lost for the season as a result of a brutal collision at home plate with Scott Cousins, who scores the go-ahead run. An MRI will confirm last season's Rookie of the Year has a fractured left fibula and three torn ligaments in his left ankle, and will need season-ending surgery to repair the damage.

2011 Yankee closer Mariano Rivera becomes the first pitcher to appear in 1,000 games for the same team. The 41 year-old Panamanian right-hander, who has compiled 572 saves and 75 wins during his 17 seasons with the Bronx Bombers, is closing in on the all-time saves record established by Trevor Hoffman with 601.

1916 In Boston, Giants outfielder Benny Kauff is picked off first base three times by Lefty Tyler. The center fielder's miscues don't hurt the team as New York reels off its 14th consecutive road victory, beating the Braves, 12-1.

1925 In Chicago, Tiger outfielder Ty Cobb becomes the first player to collect 1,000 career extra-base hits when he doubles in Detroit's 8-1 win over the White Sox. The 'Georgia Peach', who surpassed Honus Wagner's record of 993 earlier in the season, will finish his 24-year major league career with 1,139.

1929 Giants' Pat Crawford and Lies Bell of the Braves both hit grand slams in the same game in pinch-hitting appearances. New York beats Boston in the Polo Grounds contest, 15-8.

1947 The record for the largest crowd to attend a single game in baseball history is set when 74,747 fans, not including the 1,140 people who get their money back when it turns out there is no place left to stand after buying standing room tickets, watch the Yankees beat Boston, 9-3, in a Monday evening tilt at the Bronx ballpark. The previous mark was set in 1932 at Cleveland's spacious Municipal Stadium with a Sunday afternoon game attracting 73,592 patrons to witness Philadelphia's 1-0 victory over the hometown Indians, a contest that takes only a hour and fifty minutes to complete.

1959 The Yankees trade Jerry Lumpe, Tom Sturdivant, and right-hander Johnny Kucks, the first player in franchise history to throw a shutout in Game 7 of the Fall Classic, to the A's in exchange for Hector Lopez and Ralph Terry. In three years, Terry will become the only other Bronx Bomber hurler to pitch a shutout in the seventh game of a World Series.

:be: 1993 Carlos Martinez hits a fly ball to Jose Canseco that caroms off the Ranger outfielder's head over the fence for a home run. The fourth inning solo homer will prove to be the difference when the Indians edge Texas at Cleveland Stadium, 7-6. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... 9StStOsFpg

1997 For the first time in twenty years, two inside-the-park homers are hit in the same inning when Sammy Sosa of the Cubs and the Pirates infielder Tony Womack both circle the bases for round-trippers five minutes apart in the sixth frame of the Cubs' 2-1 victory at Three Rivers Stadium. Ranger teammates Bump Wills and Toby Harrah hit back-to-back inside-the-park home runs on consecutive pitches at Yankee Stadium in 1977.

:be: 2000 At Yankee Stadium the game against Boston is delayed when a fan falls from the upper deck and remains motionless for five minutes on the screen behind home plate. The 24 year-old man suddenly sits up and raises both arms high, and then is promptly arrested on a disorderly conduct charge.

2006 Derek Jeter, with a dribbler up the third-base line for an infield single off KC's Scott Elarton, becomes the eighth player in Yankee history to collect 2,000 career hits. The 31 year-old shortstop joins Yogi Berra, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Don Mattingly, Babe Ruth, and Bernie Williams in reaching the milestone.

1941 Play is halted in the seventh inning of Braves-Giants game at the Polo Grounds so the crowd of 17,009 and players can listen to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's radio address over the stadium's P.A. system. After FDR announces the Proclamation of an Unlimited National Emergency, the tied 1-1 contest is resumed after a 45-minute delay.

1959 National League president Warren Giles rules the final score of Haddix's 'perfect game' is 1-0. Henry Aaron (for leaving base path) and Joe Adcock (for passing Aaron) are declared out with Adcock's round-tripper scored as a double instead of a home run.

1960 Orioles catcher Clint Courtney becomes the first backstop to use the big knuckleball glove, an innovation of manager Paul Richards. The larger mitt, which has a 45-inch circumference, helps as knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm goes the distance in Baltimore's 3-2 victory at Yankee Stadium in a game that doesn't feature a wild pitch or a passed ball.

1968 Major league baseball expands outside the confines of the United States when the National League announces the addition of Montreal to the circuit. San Diego is also awarded an expansion team.

:be: 1981 After Lenny Randle drops to his hands and knees in an attempt to 'encourage' Amos Otis' slow roller to go foul, umpire Larry McCoy accuses the Mariner third baseman of blowing the ball foul. Randle's explanation that he was merely yelling at the ball not to stay fair is initially convincing until Royals' manager Jim Frey complains.

1984 Mario Soto, Cincinnati's starting pitcher, is ejected from the game when he shoves Steve Rippley, the third base umpire who called Ron Cey's foul ball down the left field line a home run. Although the decision will be reversed, the Reds' right-hander will also attack Cubs coach Don Zimmer, prompting National League president Chub Feeney to suspended the fiery fireballer for five games, the first of the two suspensions he will be given this season.

 1986

“ What do you expect when they build a ball park on the ocean?". - Oil Can Boyd, after a game at Cleveland Stadium, located on the shore of Lake Erie, is postponed due to fog.

The Red Sox defeat the Indians, 2-0, in a game shortened due to the dense fog that rolls into Cleveland Stadium. The postponed contest, which ends with the Tribe having base runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, prompts Boston’s right-hander Oil Can Boyd to infamously blame the lack of visibility on the ballpark’s proximity to the ocean, not nearby Lake Erie.

1997 At the Metrodome, Ken Griffey Jr. breaks his own major league mark for home runs hit through May when he goes deep for his 23rd round-tripper of the season in an 11-10 loss to Minnesota. The Mariners outfielder had established the record in 1994.

2000 The Reds retire the No. 24 jersey worn by Hall of Famer Tony Perez, marking just the sixth time the oldest professional baseball organization has bestowed the honor. The former first baseman and manager joins Fred Hutchinson (1), Johnny Bench (5), Joe Morgan (8), Ted Kluszewski (18), and Frank Robinson (20) to be honored in such a manner. Ken Griffey Jr., after being acquired by the Reds in the off season, agrees to switch his uniform number from 24 to 30, the number worn by his father as a member of the Big Red Machine.

2006 Curt Schilling and the Red Sox beat the Devil Rays, 6-4, making the right-handed hurler the 104th player to amass 200 victories. Pitching a perfect ninth inning, Jonathan Papelbon establishes a rookie record by recording his 18th save in 18 tries.

2009 Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka and two relievers combine to throw six wild pitches, making it only the fifth time since 1900 that the dubious feat has been accomplished. Dice K ties an 80-year club franchise with four errant throws to catcher George Kottaras, with relievers Manny Delcarmen and Justin Masterson each uncorking one.

1930 Phillies right-hander Grover Cleveland Alexander ends his 20-year career with a relief appearance in the team's 5-1 loss in Boston. 'Old Pete' finishes his two decades in the major leagues with a 373-208 (.642) record, which includes winning 30 or more games in three consecutive seasons beginning in 1915, along with a 2.56 lifetime ERA.

1939 Over two successive games, George Selkirk hits four homers in four at-bats against the same pitcher. The Yankee outfielder victimized A's starter Robert Joyce with two homers yesterday and continued the assault against him today with two more round-trippers when the right-hander comes into the game in relief.

1941 Prior to the first major league game played at night in Washington, D.C., Senator legend Walter Johnson throws a strike through a beam of light triggering a switch that illuminates Griffith Stadium. On the field, things are not as bright for the home team when it suffers its tenth consecutive setback, a 6-5 loss to the Yankees.

1951 After starting his career 0-for-12, Giants rookie Willie Mays gets his first hit, a 450-foot homer off Braves left-hander Warren Spahn. Ironically, it is the first of 18 home runs the 'Say Hey Kid' will hit off the Hall of Fame hurler, the most he will hit off any one pitcher.

1956 Pirates first baseman Dale Long hits his eighth home run in eight games. This major league record will be later tied by Yankee first baseman Don Mattingly (1987) and Mariner outfielder Ken Griffey, Jr. (1993).

1968 The American League votes to divide itself into two divisions and plans to reduce its schedule to 156 games. The Junior Circuit, however, will reconsider and will continue to play a schedule of 162 contests.

1976 Ron LeFlore's 31-game hitting streak comes to an end when Ed Figueroa and Tippy Martinez hold him hitless in four at-bats in Detroit's 9-5 loss to the Yankees. The Tiger outfielder's span of consecutive games with at least one hit, the longest American League hitting streak in 27 years, began on the final day of last season.

1987 Mike Young becomes only the fifth major leaguer to hit two extra-inning home runs in the same game when he goes deep in the 10th and 12th frames. The Orioles DH's second overtime round-tripper gives the Birds an 8-7 walk-off victory over the Halos at Memorial Stadium.

1996 In the Orioles' 12-8 win over Seattle at the Kingdome, Cal Ripken blasts three home runs, a grand slam and two two-run round-trippers, giving him a career-high eight RBIs. The Baltimore shortstop's younger brother, Billy, also goes deep for the Birds, making it the second time the siblings have both homered in the same game.

1998 In the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and his team leading the Giants 8-6, Diamondbacks' manager Buck Showalter orders that Barry Bonds be intentionally walked with the bases loaded by reliever Gregg Olson. The free pass works when the next batter, Brett Mayne, lines outs to deep center field, giving Arizona an 8-7 victory at Candlestick Park.

2000 The Angels, for the first time in franchise history, hit four homers in one inning. In the fifth frame of the Halos' 11-4 victory, Darin Erstad, Mo Vaughn, Tim Salmon and Garret Anderson all go yard.

2003 When Rafael Furcal, Mark DeRosa and Gary Sheffield all go deep off the Reds' Jeff Austin in the bottom of the first inning, the Braves become only the second team in big league history to begin a game with three consecutive home runs. In San Diego's home opener in 1987, the Padres wasted no time making up a two-run first inning deficit as each of the first three batters, Marvell Wynn, Tony Gwynn, and John Kruk, all went yard in the bottom of the first inning off Giant starter Roger Mason.

2004 Saving the Yankees’ 7-5 win over the Devil Rays in Tampa Bay, Mariano Rivera notches his 300th career save. The Panama City native becomes the first Yankee and 17th reliever in major league history to reach the milestone.

2006 At AT&T Park, Barry Bonds passes Babe Ruth on the all-time home run list, taking sole possession of second place when he hits the 715th homer of his 21-year big league career. The historic homer, which comes off a 90-mph fastball thrown by Byung-Hyum Kim of the Rockies, makes the Giants outfielder the most prolific left-handed slugger in baseball history.

1911 Riding the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Cubs complete their 191-mile journey from Columbus, Ohio to their game in Pittsburgh in three hours and thirty-five minutes. The trip, which sets a land-speed record, will last 75-minutes longer than the time it will take Chicago to beat the Bucs at Forbes Field, 4-1.

1922 The Supreme Court rules that organized baseball is a sport and not a business, which exempts major league clubs from antitrust laws and interstate commerce rules.

1928 At Ebbets Field, Bill Terry hits for the cycle to pace the Giants to a 12-5 victory over the Robins (Dodgers). The New York first baseman is the first player in major league history to include a grand slam as part of the cycle.

1946 In a reverse integration role, Edward Klep becomes the first white to play in the Negro leagues. In a game played in Grand Rapids, the Erie, Pennsylvania native tosses seven innings for the Cleveland Buckeyes against the American Giants in his debut with the Negro American League team.

1956 In a 10-1 loss to the Dodgers at Forbes Field, Dale Long is held hitless by Don Newcombe, ending his consecutive-game home run streak. The Pirates' first baseman had established a new major league mark by homering in the last eight Pittsburgh contests.

1966 For the second consecutive day, Ron Santo delivers a walk-off home run in extra-innings against Atlanta when his 10th-inning blast gives the Cubs a 3-2 victory at Wrigley Field. Yesterday, the third baseman ended the game with a three-run‚ 12th-inning homer, beating the Braves, 8-5.

1979 At Dodger Stadium, Dusty Baker, Rick Sutcliffe, Steve Garvey, Gary Thomasson, Derrel Thomas, Joe Ferguson, and Davey Lopes set a team record by hitting seven home runs as the Dodgers crush the Reds, 17-6.

1990 A's Rickey Henderson's theft of third base in the sixth inning of a 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays breaks the 62 year-old American League stolen base record of 892 held by Ty Cobb.

1996 Cal Ripken hits his 334th career round-tripper to move past Eddie Murray for first-place on the Orioles' all-time list. The Baltimore shortstop goes deep over the left field wall off Sterling Hitchcock in the sixth inning of the team's 9-8 defeat to Seattle at the Kingdome.

2000 At Yankee Stadium, Randy Velarde completes the tenth unassisted triple play in major league history. With runners on first and second, Shane Spencer hits a line drive to the A's second baseman, who catches the ball, tags out Jorge Posada coming from first base, and steps on second, tripling up Tino Martinez, who took off for third, to complete the rare event.

2002 Yankee fireballer Roger Clemens becomes the third major leaguer to strike out 10 or more batters in at least 100 games. Nolan Ryan (215) and Randy Johnson (175) are the other two hurlers to have accomplished the feat.

2010 The Giants call up Buster Posey to start at first base, and the 23 year-old rookie responds going three-for-four with three RBIs in a 12-1 rout of the Diamondbacks at AT&T Park. The Leesburg, GA native, who will be selected as the National League's Rookie of the Year at the end of the season, will not become the team's starting catcher until Bengie Molina is traded to Texas at the end of June.

2010 Roy Halladay throws the 20th perfect game in major league history, outdueling Josh Johnson in the Phillies' 1-0 victory over the Marlins at Miami’s Sun Life Stadium. The former American League Cy Young Award winner, obtained from Toronto in the off-season, joins Jim Bunning as the only other hurler in franchise history to accomplish the feat.

2014 In the Blue Jays’ 8-6 loss to Kansas City at the Rogers Centre, Edwin Encarnacion hits a pair of two-run homers, both off Royals right-hander James Shields, to set a franchise record for home runs in a month with 16. The Toronto first baseman now also shares the American League mark for most home runs in the month of May with Yankees legend Mickey Mantle.

1894 After going 0-for-6 in the first game of a doubleheader, Beaneater Bob Lowe becomes the first major leaguer to hit four home runs in one game, helping Boston to beat Cincinnati and Elton 'Icebox' Chamberlain, 20-11.

1913 Red Sox outfielder and future Hall of Famer Harry Hooper becomes the first major leaguer to start both games of a doubleheader with a home run. The feat will not be repeated again until 1993, when A's leadoff hitter Rickey Henderson opens each game of a twin bill against Cleveland with a homer.

1922 After being traded for one another between games of a doubleheader, Chicago outfielder Cliff Heathcote and Redbird right fielder Max Flack exchange their Cardinal and Cub uniforms. The pair of fly chasers will both get hits for their new teams in the nightcap of Cubs Park twin bill, which is swept by the home team, 4-1 and 3-1.

1930 Rogers Hornsby receives his MVP award and is given a thousand gold coins by National League president John Heydler at a ceremony at home plate prior to the Cubs' contest against St. Louis. Ironically, the ‘Rajah’ will break his ankle while advancing to third base during the Wrigley Field contest and will not play again until the middle of August.

:be: 1932 After dropping a twin bill, some White Sox players accuse George Moriarty of deliberately blowing calls against their team. The umpire, a former Pale Hose player himself, challenges them to a fight, but after he knocks down pitcher Mike Gaston with one punch, skipper Lew Fonseca and backstops Charlie Berry and Frank Grube even the score by thrashing the aggressive arbitrator.

1932 In a pre-game ceremony, the Yankees dedicate a plaque in memory of skipper Miller Huggins. Their former manager, who died near the end of last season, would be delighted with today's doubleheader sweep of the Red Sox, 7-5 and 13-3.

1934 Ben Chapman breaks up Earl Whitehill's no-hitter in the bottom of the ninth inning at Yankee Stadium. Last season, the Bronx Bomber left fielder, after being provoked, hit the right-hander with a punch in the passageway, causing a melee between the two teams that resulted in a 20-minute delay of the game before the police could restore order.

1935 At the Baker Bowl, Babe Ruth of the Boston Braves plays his final major league game, going hitless in a first inning at-bat against the Phillies. On June 2, the former Yankees superstar will announce his retirement from baseball.

1938 A new Yankee Stadium attendance record is set as 81,841 fans attend a doubleheader against the Red Sox. The Bronx Bombers sweep the twin bill, 10-0 and 5-4.

1956 Mickey Mantle comes within 18 inches of becoming the first player to hit a home run out of Yankee Stadium. The prodigious poke off Senators' right-hander Pedro Ramos was still climbing when the ball struck the facade in the upper stands in right field.

1982 Cal Ripken's 2,632 record consecutive game streak, which will span 17 seasons, begins with the Oriole rookie going 0-for-2, batting eighth in a 6-0 loss to Toronto at Memorial Stadium. The 21 year-old infielder plays third base, his position for the first 27 games of the streak, before becoming the team's everyday shortstop, en route to surpassing Lou Gehrig's remarkable feat in 1995.

1986 In a 6-4 loss to the Dodgers at Three Rivers Stadium, future home run king Barry Bonds goes 0-for-5 in his major league debut. The Pirates center fielder, batting leadoff, strikes out three times.

1992 Yankees' hurler Scott Sanderson beats the Brewers, 8-1, to become the ninth pitcher to defeat all 26 teams in the majors. The 6'5" righty joins Nolan Ryan, Tommy John, Don Sutton, Mike Torrez, Rick Wise, Gaylord Perry, Doyle Alexander, and Rich Gossage in accomplishing the feat.

1998 Mark McGwire hits his 27th home run to establish a major league record for the most homers hit before the month of June. Last season, Ken Griffey Jr. set the previous mark with 24 round trippers in the first two months of the season.

2001 After ending a streak of five straight losses to the Yankees, Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez makes light of the Curse of the Bambino by suggesting someone should wake up the Babe so he could drill him with a pitch. Boston will not beat the Bronx Bombers again during their final seven meetings of the season.

2001 Barry Bonds hits career homer No. 522, passing Willie McCovey and Ted Williams to move up to #11 on the all time list, and making him the number one lefty home run hitter in National League history. The round tripper is the 17th hit by the Giant outfielder in May, breaking the record set by Mickey Mantle (1956) and Mark McGwire (1998).

 2007 Toronto's third baseman Howie Clark, believing he hears teammate John McDonald calling to make the play, allows Jorge Posada's ninth-inning pop fly to land on the ground untouched for an RBI single. The Blue Jays, convinced it was baserunner Alex Rodriguez' voice which caused the infielder to back off the play, become incensed, describing the Yankee superstar's behavior as bush league.

2010 Max Scherzer becomes the first hurler since 1900 to strike out 14 batters in less than six innings. The Tigers right-hander reaches the total in five and two-thirds shutout frames en route to a Detroit 10-2 victory over Oakland at Comerica Park.

:be: 2014 The Mets become the first team to have three players appear in a game whose last name begins with a lower case 'd’, when Travis d'arnaud, Jake deGrom, and Matt den Dekker all play in the Mets’ 6-5 walk-off loss to Philadelphia at Citizens Bank Park. After having to use an upside-down capital ‘P’ on d’arnaud’s jersey last season due to lack of lower case letters, New York equipment manager Kevin Kierst asked Majestic, MLB's uniform supplier, to make 'small’ uniform letters available, knowing there would be even more of a need this season.

1927 Although it will be another 42 years before the next one, an unassisted triple play is made for the second consecutive day in the major leagues. During the ninth inning of the Navin Field contest, first baseman John Neun saves the Tigers' 1-0 victory when he completes the rare play by catching a Homer Summa line drive, tagging Charlie Jamieson, who was on first, and beating Glenn Myatt to second base, making it the first time the last three outs of a game result from solo triple killing.

1938 Lou Gehrig plays in his 2000th consecutive game, collecting a RBI single in the Yankees' 12-5 victory over Boston in the Bronx ballpark. The 34 year-old first baseman will play in another 130 straight games before amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) shortens his Hall of Fame career.

1948 Tommy Lasorda, best known as the Dodgers’ Hall of Fame skipper, strikes out 25 batters and collects the game-winning hit when the Schenectady Blue Jays defeat the Amsterdam Rugmakers, 6-5, in 15 innings. The promising southpaw, who goes the distance in the CanAm minor-league contest played in McNearney Stadium, believes he probably threw more than 300 pitches during the game

1949 Charley Lupica announces from a twenty-foot platform atop a flagpole that he will remain perched there until the Indians win another pennant or are eliminated from the race. Although the local grocery store owner abandons his post in late September with the Tribe in fourth place, Cleveland owner Bill Veeck will reward the loyal fan with a souvenir 50-foot flagpole and a brand new car.

1961 Carroll Hardy, batting for Carl Yastrzemski, bunts for a single in the eighth inning of Boston's 7-6 loss to the Yankees. The Red Sox outfielder will be the only player to pinch-hit for both Captain Carl and Ted Williams.

1964 In the nightcap of a doubleheader at Shea Stadium, Gaylord Perry pitches ten extra-inning frames in relief, getting the victory when the Giants beat the Mets in the longest game ever played in baseball history, 8-6. During the seven hour, 23 minute, 23-inning marathon, the future Hall of Famer is reported to have thrown his first spitball in a major league game.

1975 For the fifth time in his career, Cesar Tovar gets his team's lone hit in a game when he breaks up Catfish Hunter's bid for a no-hitter with a sixth-inning single in the Rangers' 6-0 loss to the Yankees. The Texas DH also accomplished the feat against Barry Moore (1967 Senators), Dave McNally (1969 Orioles), Mike Cuellar (1969 Orioles), and Dick Bosman (1970 Senators).

1976 After an error sets up a six-run rally for the Padres in the eighth inning, the new Atlanta owner, Ted Turner, invites the 2,994 fans watching the Braves lose to San Diego, 10-7, to come back the next night as his guests.

1999 After consulting a dugout TV monitor, Frank Pulli becomes the first umpire to use instant replay to make a call, changing Cliff Floyd's fifth inning home run to a ground-rule double in the Marlins' 5-2 loss to the Cardinals. After the Pro Player Stadium contest, the National League League officials make it clear the use of technology should not have been used to reverse the call.

2001 The Red Sox finally beat the Yankees in their eighth attempt, and for the first time in over a year since Pedro Martinez scoffed at the 'Curse'. The right-hander was 7-1 with a 1.44 ERA when he said, "Wake up the Bambino and let me face him -- I'll drill him in the "%#$," but after the comment he managed only seven more winless starts, making it first time he did not win in seven straight starts since the first seven major league appearances as a rookie with the Dodgers.

2008 In front of many visiting Red Sox fans at Camden Yards, Manny Ramirez becomes the 24th and 12th-youngest major leaguer to hit 500 career home runs. The historic ball, thrown in the seventh inning by Orioles right-hander Chad Bradford, is caught in the stands by Damon Woo, who presents the Boston slugger with the ball after the game.

1920 Babe Ruth, an accomplished hurler acquired from Boston in the offseason for his hitting prowess, bats cleanup in the Yankees' lineup, and also gets the win when he tosses four innings as the starter in the team's 14-7 victory over Washington at the Polo Grounds. During his 15 seasons with New York, the 'Sultan of Swat' will take the mound just five times for the club, including a complete-game victory in 1933.

1925 Lou Gehrig, making the only appearance as a pinch-hitter in his 17-year career, begins his streak of playing in 2,130 straight games when he comes off the Yankee bench to hit for rookie infielder Pee-Wee Wanninger. Ironically, Wanninger is the player who ended a consecutive-game streak of 1,307 consecutive games when he started the May 5th contest in place of Everett Scott, the team's regular shortstop.

1939 Four years after participating in the first major league night game as the visiting team in Cincinnati's Crosley Field, the Phillies host their first evening tilt, bowing to Pittsburgh at Shibe Park, 5-2. The team's loss to the Bucs is not the first major league night contest to be played in Philadelphia, or at Shibe Park for that matter, as the A's, who share the ballpark with the NL team, lost to Cleveland playing under the lights two weeks ago in the first night game in American League history.

1941 In front of the largest crowd in the American League this season, Johnny Sturm hits his first major league homer, an eighth-inning two-run blast into the right field stands at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. The round-tripper, which breaks a 1-1 deadlock, begins a streak in which one or more Yankees will hit a home run in 24 consecutive games, a record that will stand for 53 years.

1975 California right-hander Nolan Ryan's 100th career victory is a memorable one when he no-hits the Orioles at Anaheim Stadium, 1-0. The Angels' fireballer ties Sandy Koufax's big league mark, notching his fourth career no-hitter.

1987 Thanks to Indian hurler Phil Niekro's 9-6 win over the Tigers, the Niekro brothers pass the Perrys (Gaylord and Jim) with 530 combined victories. Phil and Joe will end their careers with a total of 539 wins, making them the most successful sibling combination in major league history.

1992 The Astros use their top pick, the No. 1 overall selection, to draft Cal State Fullerton infielder Phil Nevin over Derek Jeter, a shortstop from Kalamazoo Central High. Houston, aware of the huge signing bonuses given to the previous two top drafts, Todd Van Poppel and Brien Taylor, may have not selected the future Hall of Famer, drafted sixth overall by the Yankees, because it was believed the high school standout was seeking a bonus of at least $1 million to forego playing baseball at the University of Michigan.

1997 When Wilton Guerrero scurries to pick up pieces of his shattered bat after grounding out to start the game, home plate ump Steve Ripley becomes suspicious and discovers that the bat has been altered. The rookie Dodgers second baseman is immediately ejected from the game by crew chief Bruce Froemming, and the 21 year-old infielder will also receive an eight-day suspension and a $1,000 fine for his use of a corked bat.

 2007 After being ejected from the game against the Chattanooga Lookouts, Mississippi Braves manager Phillip Wellman kicks dirt on home plate, and then proceeds to draw the umpire's strike zone in the dirt before tossing third base into the outfield. The minor-league skipper continues his tirade when he crawls to the mound, throws the rosin bag like a hand grenade at the ump, and then carries second base with him as he exits AT&T Field.

2009 In a 5-2 victory over the Indians at Progressive Field, the Yankees set a major league record by playing 18 straight games without committing an error. The new mark, which surpasses a string put together by the 2006 Red Sox, will end tomorrow when Bronx Bomber backstop Jorge Posada throws the ball into center field trying to gun down a would-be base stealer.

1891 Reds' right-hander Charley Radbourn earns his 300th victory, beating the Beaneaters at Boston's South End Grounds, 10-8. 'Old Hoss', who will finish 484 of the 497 games he starts, will end his 11-year career this season with 309 victories.

1921 Reds' outfielder Pat Duncan hits the first over-the-fence home run at Cincinnati's Redland Field. The spacious ballpark, which will become known as Crosley Field, made its debut nine seasons ago in 1912.

1935 Braves outfielder Babe Ruth announces his retirement from baseball. The 40 year-old former Yankees slugger wanted to retire three weeks sooner, but team owner Emil Fuchs persuaded him to continue to play because Boston hadn't played in every National League park.

1941 Upon their arrival in Detroit, the Yankees learn the sad news that their captain, Lou Gehrig, seventeen days prior to his 38th birthday, has died in his sleep due to ALS in his Riverdale home. It was on this day exactly 16 years ago the 'Iron Horse’ broke into the Bronx Bombers' starting lineup.

1957 Moe Drabowsky sets a National League record for the most hit batsmen in a single game when he plunks four Reds in the Cubs' 4-3 loss at Crosley Field. Cincinnati's right fielder Frank Robinson is drilled in consecutive innings by the right-hander, who was born in Ozanna, Poland.

1995 The Expos pick Serra High School (San Mateo, CA) standout Tom Brady in the 18th round, the 507th player selected overall, in baseball's amateur draft. The tall athletic 17 year-old catcher with a powerful left-handed swing and a rocket arm elects to play football at the University of Michigan, before making his record-setting six Super Bowl appearances as the quarterback for the NFL Patriots.

1996 In St. Louis, Darryl Kile ties a major league record by hitting four batters. The Astros right-hander becomes the first National League player to do it since Moe Drabowsky accomplished the feat on the same date while toiling for the Cubs in 1957.

2000 With the Tigers visiting Wrigley Field for the first time since the 1945 World Series, Cubs' reliever Rick Aguilera pitches a perfect ninth inning for his 300th save to nail down Chicago's 2-0 win.

2010

"I feel that without enough occasional starts to be sharper coming off the bench, my continued presence as a player would be an unfair distraction to my teammates, and their success as team is what the ultimate goal should be." - Ken Griffey, Jr., on his retirement

After 22 seasons of compiling can’t miss Hall of Fame statistics, Mariner outfielder Ken Griffey, Jr. unexpectedly issues a statement through the team announcing that he has decided to retire. The now 40 year-old Junior, once known as the Kid, leaves the game fifth on the all-time career home run list with 630 round-trippers.

2010 Tigers starter Armando Galarraga, after retiring 26 consecutive Cleveland batters, appears to have hurled the season’s third perfect game when the throw from the first baseman to the pitcher, covering the bag, clearly beats the baserunner for the final out, but umpire Jim Joyce emphatically calls Jason Donald safe. After seeing the replay, the first base arbitrator tearfully admits his error, apologizing to the 28 year-old Venezuelan right-hander for his blown call.

2013 At PNC Park, Garrett Jones became only the second player and the first Pirate to hit ball into Davy Jones' Locker on the fly when his two-run eighth inning round-tripper ties the score in the Bucs' eventual 5-4 win over Cincinnati. In 2002, Houston's Daryle Ward also launched a shot that splashed into the waters of the Allegheny River.

1902 Cardinal right-hander Mike O'Neil hits the first pinch-hit grand slam in major league history. The hurler's ninth inning blast off Beaneater Togie Pittinger proves to be the difference in the Redbirds' 11-9 victory over Boston at South End Grounds.

 1914 The court of appeals awards $3,500 to Charles A. Edling, a lawyer who was hit in the nose with a foul ball that broke through a wire netting while he was attending a Kansas City Blues game at Association Park in 1911. The legal ruling states if the American Association team “had kept their eye on the ball with the accuracy that they contend Edling should have exhibited, they would have attained a higher place in the pennant race”.

1932 In Philadelphia, Lou Gehrig becomes the first player in the twentieth century to blast four home runs in one game, and barely misses hitting a fifth. The Yankees hammer out a major league record with 50 total bases in a 20-13 slugfest with Philadelphia.

1932 Citing poor health, the Giants announce the resignation of long-time skipper John McGraw. During his thirty-two year tenure, the fiery manager won three World Series and nine National League pennants, including a record four consecutive flags.

1932 Tony Lazzeri blasts a grand slam to complete his natural cycle, with his four hits being accomplished in sequential order: single, double, triple, home run. This rare and amazing feat is overshadowed by Yankee teammate Lou Gehrig hitting four home runs in the same game, and the announcement of long-time Giants manager John McGraw's retirement on the same day.

1933 The Yankees survive the visiting A's 11-run outburst in the second inning, beating Philadelphia 17-11. The Bronx Bombers also enjoy a big inning, putting up a 10-spot in the fifth frame.

1952 The Red Sox deal Johnny Pesky, Walt Dropo, Fred Hatfield, Don Lenhardt, and Bill Wight to the Tigers in exchange for Hoot Evers, George Kell, Johnny Lipon, and Dizzy Trout. Pesky will return to Boston to serve as a coach, manager, announcer, and assistant general manager and will have his uniform number 6 retired by the organization in 2008.

1978 Davey Johnson's ninth inning bases-loaded home run off Terry Forster gives the Phillies a 5-1 walk-off victory over Los Angeles at Veterans Stadium. The 35 year-old second baseman is the first major leaguer to pinch-hit two grand slams in one season.

1980 The Expos' first-round selection in the amateur draft is University of Arizona standout Terry Francona, who will be signed by the team’s general manager John McHale for $100,000. In 1958, McHale, then the GM of the Tigers, had refused to give a $1000 raise to their top pick's dad, Tito, who had ask for a salary increase to help support a new addition to his family, a son named Terry.

1989 In a 22-inning game played at the Astrodome, Houston beats the Dodgers, 5-4, when Rafael Ramirez' run-scoring single plates Bill Doran to end the contest at 2:50 a.m., seven hours and 14-minutes after it started. The longest game in National League history features L.A. center fielder John Shelby going 0-for-10 and southpaw Fernando Valenzuela finishing the game at first base.

1989 Nolan Ryan pitches his 11th career one-hitter, beating the Mariners, 6-1. The Alvin, Texas native breaks Bob Feller's record of 15 low-hit games, having now pitched a combination of 16 no-hit and one-hit games.

1993 Although Alex Rodriguez called and asked the team not to choose him, the Mariners still select the stand-out scholastic shortstop with the first pick in the amateur draft. The Westminster Christian High School (FL) senior, who hit .417 with 17 homers along with 90 stolen bases, told club officials that Seattle was too far away and he wanted to play in the National League.

1998 Orlando Hernandez gets the victory in his major league debut when the Yankees defeat the Devil Rays in New York, 7-1. 'El Duque', who escaped from Cuba by boat six months ago, allows a run on five hits in seven innings.

2001 Manny Ramirez' 491-foot, fifth deck blast is the longest home run ball ever hit in the history of the SkyDome. The Red Sox DH's moon shot eclipses A's first baseman Mark McGwire's 1996 mark by three feet.

:hi: 2003 Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter is named the 11th captain in club history. The 28 year-old joins Hal Chase (1912), Roger Peckinpaugh (1914-21), Babe Ruth (for six days in 1922), Everett Scott (1922), Lou Gehrig (1935-41), Thurman Munson (1976-79), Graig Nettles (1982-84), co-captains Willie Randolph and Ron Guidry (1986-89), and Don Mattingly (1991-95).

2010 The day after he loses a perfect game on a blown call, Armando Galarraga presents the lineup card at home plate to Jim Joyce, the ump who made the infamous call. In a display of outstanding sportsmanship that is applauded nationwide, the two shake hands and when the pitcher walks away, the apologetic arbitrator pats the Venezuelan right-hander on the shoulder.

2010 A day after Jim Joyce called Jason Donald, who is obviously out, safe with two outs in the ninth inning, ruining Armando Galarraga's bid for a perfect game, Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm issues a proclamation stating the Tigers right-hander indeed pitched a perfect game against Cleveland, dismissing the blown call by the first base umpire. Additionally, U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich) reports she is lobbying baseball commissioner Bud Selig to declare Galarraga’s performance a perfect game, and long-time U.S. Representative John D. Dingell (D-Mich) says he is planning to introduce a resolution in Congress asking MLB to overturn the call.

2012 In a pre-game ceremony at Citi Field, John Franco becomes the 26th member of the Mets Hall of Fame. The former southpaw reliever, who also played for Cincinnati and Houston, leads all lefties in all-time saves with 424, which includes 276 for the Mets, a franchise record.

1911 In a 26-3 win over the Braves at Palace of the Fans in Cincinnati, thirteen Reds players cross home plate. It is the highest number of different players from one team to score in a single game in major league history.

1940 The Braves sign South Park High School (Buffalo, NY) standout Warren Spahn, who will make his major league debut in 1942 when he appears in two games as a 20 year-old for Boston before serving three years in the Army during World War II. The Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient will return to the National League in 1946 to win the first game of his career at the age of 25 en route to becoming the all-time winningest southpaw in the history of the game with 363 victories.

1951 Pirates outfielder Gus Bell hits for the cycle in Philadelphia as the Bucs beat the Phillies, 12-4. In 2004, his grandson David, whose dad Buddy also played in the major leagues, also collects a single, double, triple, and home run in a game, marking the first time a grandfather-grandson combination has accomplished the feat.

1964 At Connie Mack Stadium, Sandy Koufax throws his third no-hitter in three years, blanking the Phillies 3-0. The Dodgers' southpaw, who will add a perfect game to his resume next season, joins Bob Feller as the only other modern major leaguer to pitch three career hitless games.

1968 Don Drysdale, pitching his sixth consecutive shutout, defeats the Pirates, 5-0. The Dodger right-hander will extend his major league record scoreless streak to 58.2 innings before yielding a run in his next start.

1968 In LA's Ambassador Hotel, Robert Kennedy, giving his victory speech for his win in the California primary before being fatally shot, tells his followers in the packed ballroom, “I like to express my high regard to Don Drysdale, who pitched his straight sixth shutout tonight. And I hope we can have as good fortune in our campaign.” At nearby Chavez Ravine, the Dodgers right-hander had blanked the Bucs, 6-0, extending his scoreless streak to 54 innings.

:be: 1974 On ten-cent beer night, when an estimated 60,000 cups of brew are sold to a crowd of 25,134, the Indians forfeit the game due to the unruly behavior of their fans. Home plate ump Nestor Chylak stops play with the score tied at five in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Rangers the victory.

1986 In a 12-3 rout of the Braves, Pirates rookie outfielder Barry Bonds hits his first major league home run, off Craig McMurtry. Bobby’s son will become the All-time career home run leader, hitting 762 during his 22-year career playing for Pittsburgh and the San Francisco Giants.

1996 Jacksonville Suns' (Tigers - AA) reliever Pamela Davis throws one scoreless inning of relief and gets the win in a minor league exhibition game against the Australian Olympic team, becoming the first woman to pitch for a major league farm club.

2000 Esteban Yan becomes the 14th player in baseball history to hit the first pitch thrown to him in a professional game for home run. In addition to his historic homer, the Devil Rays hurler picks up the victory in the inter-league contest against the Mets.

2004 At Turner Field, Julio Franco became the oldest player in baseball history to hit a grand slam. The 45 year-old Dominican first baseman’s first inning base-loaded home run proves to be the difference as the Braves beat the Phillies, 8-4.

2009 In the opener of a twin bill, Randy Johnson gives a solid six-inning performance in the Giants’ 5-1 victory over the Nationals to earn his 300th victory. The 'Big Unit' becomes the 24th pitcher to accomplish the feat, and first to reach the milestone on his first attempt since Tom Seaver beat the Yankees in 1985.

1920 Citing the abolition of the spitball as the reason for the dramatic increase of home runs, Tom Shibe denies the baseballs are livelier this season. The A's vice president is also a member of the company which makes the baseballs.

1939 Tigers right-hander Tommy Bridges limits the Yankees to just four hits, blanking the Bronx Bombers, 3-0. It will be the only time New York will be shut out this season.

1961 Robin Roberts, who will finish his career playing with three other clubs, wins his last game for the Phillies, beating the Giants at Candlestick Park, 3-2. The future Hall of Famer's lone victory this season, a complete-game six-hitter, is his 234th win for Philadelphia, the most by a right-hander in franchise history.

1974 Oakland outfielder Reggie Jackson, tired of being picked on by Billy North, tackles his A's teammate in the Tiger Stadium clubhouse, starting a nasty fight which results in some costly injuries. In addition to Jackson injuring his shoulder, Ray Fosse, attempting to separate the brawlers, crushes a disk in the catcher's neck that virtually ends his season.

1977 On Old Timers' Day, the Dodgers retire former manager Walter Alston's uniform number 24. 'Smokey' compiles a 2040-1613 (.558) record along with seven pennants that results in four World Championships during his 23 years in the dugout.

1981 Moving ahead of Early Wynn, Nolan Ryan becomes the all-time walk leader (1,777) when he throws ball four twice in his 3-0 victory over the Mets. The Astros right-handed flame thrower will end his 27-year career with 2,795 bases on balls, nearly a thousand more than Steve Carlton, who is second on the career list for issuing free passes.

1982 Cal Ripken's span of 8,243 consecutive innings begins with the Orioles' 3-1 victory over Minnesota at the Metrodome. The infielder's record streak, which will last for 904 games, ends when he is lifted in the eighth inning for a pinch runner during an 18-3 September loss to the Blue Jays in 1987.

1997 In a 14-6 rout of the Tigers in Detroit, Alex Rodriguez becomes the first Mariner to hit for the cycle in a nine inning game. In 1993, Jay Buhner accomplished the feat with a 14th inning triple at the Kingdome.

2001 By homering in his team's 57th game, Barry Bonds becomes the fastest player ever to hit 30 home runs. In 1928, it took Babe Ruth 63 games to reach the same mark.

2002 Barry Bonds passes Frank Robinson to become fourth on the all-time career home run list when he belts his 587th home run. The historic grand slam, believed to be one of the longest homers ever hit in the 34-year history of the ballpark now called Qualcomm Stadium, puts the Giants' left fielder, the single-season home run record holder with 73, exactly behind Willie Mays' 660 round-trippers for third place.

2008 Joining Mickey Mantle and Eddie Murray, Chipper Jones becomes just the third switch-hitter in major league history to hit 400 career home runs. The milestone homer is just one of his four hits the Braves' third baseman contributes to Atlanta's 7-5 comeback win over Florida.

2008 In a televised game at Fenway Park against the Rays, NESN cameras catch Manny Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis fighting in the dugout. The altercation between the Red Sox teammates is a result of Manny's taking exception to Youkilis' demonstrative behavior after the third baseman returns to the bench after striking out.

2008 At Fenway Park, Red Sox outfielder Coco Crisp takes exception to being hit in the hip by Rays' starter James Shields, and the Boston outfielder shows his displeasure by charging the mound, igniting a bench clearing brawl that will result in the ejections of the combatants along with Tampa Bay's Jonny Gomes and the suspension of eight players. In yesterday's game, Rays skipper Joe Maddon accused Crisp of intentionally trying to injure his second baseman Akinori Iwamura on a stolen base attempt.

:be: 2009 Just hours prior to its scheduled demise, Tiger Stadium is saved from complete demolition when Wayne County Circuit Judge Isidore Torres stops crews from tearing down what’s left of the ballpark at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull Avenues. A temporary restraining order, requested by the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy, gives the nonprofit group additional time to raise money for preservation and redevelopment of the historic ballpark.

2009 Caught on video shouting profanities, Alex Rios apologizes for the incident which occurred when he was leaving a Blue Jays’ charity event. After appearing to ignore a youngster's request for an autograph, the Toronto right fielder shouts an epithet when he hears an older man comment, “The way you played today Alex, you should be lucky somebody wants your autograph”.

2013 The White Sox score five times in the top of the 14th inning, but the Mariners knot the score in the bottom of the frame thanks to Kyle Seager's two-out, two-strike bases-loaded round-tripper. The third baseman's homer, the first game-tying, extra-inning grand slam in major league history, isn't enough when Chicago beats Seattle, 7-5, in the 16-inning Safeco Field contest that takes 5 hours 42 minutes to complete.

1913 The Yankees lose their thirteenth game without a victory when the team is defeated by the Indians at the Polo Grounds, 2-1. The 9-34 club's futility, which sets a franchise record, includes a 3-3 tie to Boston during the 14-game span.

:smile_: 1918 In his first at-bat at Ebbets Field since being traded by the Dodgers in the off-season, Casey Stengel calls time, steps out of the batter's box, and tips his hat, allowing a bird to fly out, much to the amazement and amusement of the fans.

1925 At Griffith Stadium, future Hall of Famer Eddie Collins hits a double to become the sixth major leaguer to collect 3000 hits. The 38 year-old White Sox infielder strokes the historic two-bagger off Washington's Walter Johnson, also a future inductee in Cooperstown.

1934 Myril Hoag becomes first Yankee in franchise history to collect six hits in one game, a major league record of six singles. The 26 year-old outfielder’s 6-for-6 performance helps the Bronx Bombers rout Boston at Fenway Park, 15-3.

1941 The Giants become the first baseball team to wear protective headgear. The plastic helmets don't provide a defense against defeats when the team drops both ends of a doubleheader to Pittsburgh at the Polo Grounds, 5-4 and 4-3.

:hi: 1944 Baseball cancels today's scheduled eight-game slate due to the Allied invasion of Normandy. The military operation, known as D-Day, has 60,000 Allied troops landing along a heavily protected 50-mile stretch of the coastline in France to fight Germany to begin an offensive assault against Hitler and the Nazi party.

1948 The Red Sox become the first team to hit three consecutive homers in one inning twice in one season. Stan Spence, Vern Stephens, and Ted Williams all go deep off Fred Hutchinson in the sixth inning of the team's 12-4 rout of Detroit at Fenway Park.

1965 Tom Tresh hits three consecutive home runs when the Yankees blast the visiting White Sox, 12-0. The outfielder's first inning round-tripper is off starter Juan Pizarro, which he follows up with third and fifth frame homers off reliever Bruce Howard.

:be: 1971 All youngsters attending the Yankee game are given a youth-sized Bobby Murcer model wooden Hillerich & Bradsby Louisville Slugger during the team's annual Bat Day promotion. When the young fans begin banging their bats in unison during the late innings of the Bronx Bombers’ 5-2 victory over Kansas City, pieces of concrete begin to fall into lower levels of the stadium, a harbinger that the Bronx ballpark may be in serious need of repair.

1990 Stump Merrill replaces Bucky Dent as Yankee manager. During his two-year tenure in the dugout, the former minor league skipper will compile a 120-155 (.436) record before being fired at the end of next season in favor of Buck Showalter.

1996 John Valentin becomes the 14th player in franchise history to hit for the cycle when he collects a two-run homer in the first inning, a triple in the third, a single in the fourth, and a double in the sixth. The Red Sox shortstop's ten total bases, three runs, and two RBIs contribute to Boston's 7-4 victory over Chicago at Fenway Park.

1999 Derek Jeter’s streak of reaching base safely ends at 54 straight games when the Mets keep him off the basepaths in their 7-2 win over the Yankees in the Bronx. The defeat also marks the end of Roger Clemens' streak of 20 consecutive victories, an American League record.

:smile_: 2000 Thanks to the Angels' video crew playing a clip from the 1994 movie "Ace Ventura, Pet Detective" on the JumboTron, the Rally Monkey is born. With the words "Rally Monkey" superimposed over a monkey jumping up and down in the Jim Carrey movie, the crowd goes wild when Anaheim scores two runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Giants, 6-5. https://youtu.be/WpqPVJFzKdc

:be: 2003 Insisting the corked bat, designed to put on home run displays during batting practice, was accidentally used in the Devil Rays' game, Cubs' slugger Sammy Sosa is suspended for eight games by Major League Baseball. Bob Watson, baseball's vice president of on-field operations, agreed the Chicago's outfielder use of an illegal bat was an "isolated incident," but one that still deserved a penalty.

:be: 2006 On the sixth day of the sixth month of the sixth year of the century, the Dodgers score six runs in the sixth inning during the sixth game of the homestand, beating the Mets, 8-5. On 05/05/05, the Twins scored five times in the fifth inning en route to a 9-0 victory over the Indians.

2007 At Petco Park, Trevor Hoffman becomes the first reliever to save 500 games. It takes the all-time saves leader 10 ninth inning pitches, including an 87 mph fastball thrown past Russell Martin for the final out, to reach the milestone in the Padres' 5-3 victory over the Dodgers.

2013 With John Sebastian's song "Welcome Back" playing in the background, the Seattle fans give Ichiro Suzuki a warm reception when the longtime Mariner legend returns to Safeco Field as a Yankee. The 39 year-old outfielder, who hit .322 during his 12 seasons with the team, was traded to the Bronx last July for Danny Farquhar and D.J. Mitchell.

1906 Christy Mathewson and Joe McGinnity give up 11 first inning runs, allowing the Cubs to rout the Giants, 19-0. Matty, who is probably still suffering the effects of diphtheria contracted in the spring, retires only one batter while issuing six bases-on-balls in the West Side Grounds contest.

:be: 1936 The Bronx Bombers beat the Indians in a 16-inning game, 5-4. During the extra-inning marathon played at Yankee Stadium, the pitchers for either team fail to record a single strikeout.

:smile_: 1938 In a game against the Red Sox, Indians' pitcher Johnny Allen storms off the mound and doesn't return when he is ordered by ump Bill McGowan to cut off his distracting dangling sweatshirt sleeve. The shirt ends up in the Hall of Fame but the Lenoir, North Carolina native doesn't.

1950 The Red Sox compile 42 total bases in their 20-4 bashing of the Browns. The Fenway fireworks will continue tomorrow when Boston adds insult to injury, beating St. Louis, 29-4.

1957 Howard University awards honorary degrees of Doctor of Laws to Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King and recently retired Dodgers infielder Jackie Robinson. In the coming years, the former baseball great and the Baptist minister will often appeared together at Civil Rights rallies, fundraising events, and demonstrations.

1960 In the Cardinals' 9-1 loss to Pittsburgh at Forbes Field, Bob Gibson ties a major league record when he strikes out four batters in one inning, the additional whiff coming as a result of a wild pitch. The fourth-inning strikeout victims include Jerry Lynch, Jim Pagliaroni, Bill Mazeroski, and Don Cardwell.

:be: 1966 The A's select future Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson in the first round (2nd pick) of the amateur draft. The Mets, with the first overall pick, choose Steve Chilcott, a high school catcher who will never play a day in the major league.

1982 Joining Lou Gehrig, Everett Scott, Billy Williams and Joe Sewell, Dodger infielder Steve Garvey becomes only the fifth player in major league history to play in 1,000 consecutive games. The first baseman, establishing a National League record, will appear in 1207 consecutive games, before streak ends next season when he breaks his thumb, playing for the Padres in a collision at home plate.

1983 Steve Carlton of the Phillies strikes out Cardinals' outfielder Lonnie Smith for his 3,522nd career strikeout to pass Nolan Ryan as the all-time strikeout leader. On the same night‚ Ryan strikes out three San Francisco batters to finish one shy of Lefty's total, but will finish his career with 5,714, far ahead of the Philadelphia left-hander's mark of 4,136.

1998 After going 6-0 against Atlanta and Florida, the Cubs complete their third consecutive three-game sweep by beating the White Sox, 13-7. The last time Chicago put together a similar streak occurred in 1918.

:bi: 2007 With the Yankees' 10-3 victory over the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, Joe Torre wins his 2,000th game as a manager. The former Braves (257), Mets (286) and Cardinals (351) skipper becomes the first person in big league history to have reached the milestone and also have at least 2,000 hits as a player.

2007 With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning at Network Associates Coliseum, Shannon Stewart lines a single to right field to break up Curt Schilling's no-hitter. Thanks to a first inning home run by David Ortiz, the Red Sox beat the A's, 1-0.

2008 Johnny Damon goes 6-for-6, including a walk-off single which gives New York a wild 12-11 comeback victory over the Royals. The outfielder becomes the first Bronx Bomber, and only the second player, to collect six hits at Yankee Stadium.
