1927 Tony Lazzeri becomes the first Yankee to hit three home runs in one game, including a ninth inning blast that ties the game. The round-tripper closes a five-run deficit, and New York goes on to beat the White Sox in the 11th inning at the Stadium, 12-11.

1934 The Reds becomes the first team to travel in an airplane when Cincinnati GM Larry MacPhail flies 19 of his players to Chicago for a series against the Cubs. In 1946, New York will be the first team to fly on a regular basis, using a chartered a Douglas DC-4, that will become known as the 'Yankee Mainliner'.

1939 At Shibe Park, the Yankees, using the long ball, rout the hometown A's 22-3. The Bronx Bombers set a franchise record, hitting eight home runs during the contest, a mark which will not be tied for 68 years.

1950 After beating the Browns 20-4 with 23 hits yesterday at Fenway Park, the Red Sox set the major-league record for runs scored by one team as they maul St. Louis again, 29-4. Boston’s two day totals set consecutive games records for hits and runs scored.

:be: 1951 White Sox reliever Marv Rotblatt becomes the first pitcher to be driven in from the bullpen when he enters the game in the 8th inning to face the Yankees in a 4-2 loss at Comiskey Park. At the present time, transportation to the mound is only for White Sox pitchers, but later in the season, the team will provide the visiting bullpen hurlers with a black Cadillac, which has been supplied by a local funeral home.

 1952 Prior to the start of a twin bill against the Reds, Dodger manager Charlie Dressen tells Cal Abrams if he wants to stay with the team that the benchwarmer will need to verbally taunt the skipper of the opposing club. Much to his chagrin, the spare outfielder, who spends the entire first game of a double-header severely heckling his opponents and their leader, is informed between games he has been traded to Cincinnati, effective tomorrow, and will need to report to his new field boss, one very angry Roger Hornsby.

1961 Becoming the first major league team to accomplish the feat, Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock and Frank Thomas hit four consecutive homers in an inning for the Braves off Reds' pitchers Jim Maloney (2) and Marshall Bridges (2) at Crosley Field. The seventh inning big fly barrage and another blast by Mathews and one by Warren Spahn, aren't enough when Cincinnati still manages to win the contest, 10-8.

1964 After other teams back off in their pursuit to sign the outstanding NC high schooler when his little toe is blown off by his brother in a hunting accident, the A's ink Jim Hunter for $75,000. The youngest of ten children of a family from Hertferd will go on to become a Hall of Fame hurler better known as 'Catfish', a name invented by club's owner Charlie Finley.

:bi: 1969 On Mickey Mantle Day, the Yankees retire uniform number 7 in front of a crowd of 60,096, the first sellout at the Bronx ballpark since the 1964 World Series. The Mick also receives a plaque from Joe DiMaggio that will be hung on the center field fence, and, then in turn, he gives the 'Yankee Clipper' a similar plaque, telling the crowd, "His should be just a little bit higher than mine."

1979 Dan Marino and John Elway are selected fourth and seventeenth, respectively, by the Kansas City Royals during the free-agent baseball draft. The two future NFL Hall of Fame quarterbacks will never appear in the major leagues, but Elway, after being redrafted by the Yankees, will play 42 games for Oneonta in the New York-Penn League in 1982, batting .318 with a .432 OBP.

1987 Angels' hurler Don Sutton (312) loses to Phil Niekro (314), who throws seven and one-third scoreless innings for the Indians in a 2-0 win at Anaheim. It is the third time this century, all occurring during the past two seasons, that two 300-game winners have started against one another.

:be: 1989 After the Pirates take a 10-0 lead in Philadelphia by sending 16 batters to the plate in the first inning, Pirates' broadcaster Jim Rooker announces if the Bucs lose the game he'll walk back to Pittsburgh. True to his word, the radio by-by-play man organizes a charity walk from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh after the season as a result of the Phillies' comeback win over the Pirates, 15-11.

2005 Going yard twice in his 4-for-4 day, Alex Rodriguez becomes the 40th and youngest big leaguer to hit 400 career home runs. On the 316th day of 29th year of his life, the Yankee superstar third baseman, who surpasses Ken Griffey Jr. for the honor, connects for a solo shot off Brewers’ southpaw Jorge De La Rosa in the eighth inning for the milestone marker.

2007 With their 3-0 victory over Detroit at Comerica Park, the Mets begin a span of 18 games to become the first team in baseball history to play six consecutive series against six different clubs that all participated in the playoffs the previous season. New York will compile an 8-10 record during the stretch playing against the Tigers, Dodgers, Yankees, Twins, A's, and the Cardinals.

1914 At the Baker Bowl, Honus Wagner becomes the second player in the history of the game to collect 3000 hits when he doubles off Philadelphia's Erskine Mayer. Cap Anson is the only major leaguer to amass as many hits.

1929 Brothers and teammates Lloyd and Paul Waner each hit a home run in the same game in the Pirates' 9-6 loss to the Robins at Ebbets Field. The homers mark the second of three times Big Poison and Little Poison will accomplish the feat.

1946 Ted Williams clouts the farthest home run ever hit at Fenway Park, a shot estimated to have traveled 502 feet before striking the straw hat of a fan sitting in seat 21 in the 37th row in of section 42 in right field. The seat will be painted red to commemorate the location of the Splendid Splinter's Ruthian blast, although at the time of the homer the area consisted of bleachers and not individual seats.

1946 En route to becoming the first team to draw two million fans at home, the Yankees reach the one million mark at the earliest date in major league history. The Bronx Bombers, the first team to attract one million patrons when 1,289,422 go through the Polo Grounds turnstiles in 1920, will average 29,422 fans this season, 14,000 more a game than for any previous season at Yankee Stadium.

1966 Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh at Metropolitan Stadium, the Twins erupt for the first five-home run inning in American League history. Rich Rollins, Zoilo Versalles, Tony Oliva, Don Mincher, and Harmon Killebrew all go deep to give the Twins a 9-4 victory over the A’s.

:be: 1984 With the score tied 3-3 and the bases loaded in the 12th inning, Garry Hancock decides to drop Pete O'Brien's long foul flyball to prevent the out from becoming a game-ending sacrifice fly. Wayne Tolleson tags up and scores the winning run for Texas when the umpires rule the left fielder had caught the ball.

1998 In the third inning of the Angels' 10-8 win over the Diamondbacks, Anaheim's Cecil Fielder and Arizona's Yamil Benitez both hit a grand slam in the Bank One Ballpark contest. It is the first time both teams hit bases-full home runs in the same inning since 1992, when Cubs infielder Ryne Sandberg and Pirates slugger Jeff King also accomplished the feat, playing at Three River Stadium.

:be: 1999 After being ejected in the 12th inning by plate umpire Randy Marsh for arguing a catcher's interference call, Bobby Valentine returns to the dugout with a fake mustache and glasses. The National League will suspend the Mets' manager for two games and fine him for using the disguise. https://youtu.be/ok6pLKBD-XQ

2008 Ken Griffey, Jr. becomes the sixth player in major league history to hit 600 career home runs. With a runner on third, Junior goes deep in the first inning on a 3-1 pitch thrown by Marlins' moundsman Mark Hendrickson in the Reds' 9-4 victory at Dolphin Stadium.

:be: 2009 Twenty-one teams miss an opportunity to draft 17 year-old high school standout Mike Trout, who in three years will become an impact player in the American League during his rookie season. The 'Millville Meteor', selected in the first round of the Amateur Draft (25th overall) by the Angels, is most notably passed over by the Nationals and the Diamondbacks, teams that would both pick twice before Los Angeles made its first selection.

1921 Yankee slugger Babe Ruth hits his 120th home run off Indian pitcher Jim Bagby to become baseball's career home run leader. It is a position the 'Sultan of Swat' will hold until Hank Aaron hits number 715 in 1974.

1937 The Senators trade Bobo Newsom (3-4, 5.85) and outfielder Ben Chapman (.262, 0, 12) to the Red Sox for the brother battery of Wes (3-6, 7.61) and Rick Ferrell (.308, 1, 4), as well as outfielder Mel Almada (.236, 1, 9). Rick, the catcher, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984, but his brother Wes, the pitcher, will hit more career home runs.

1952 A few hours after he fires Roger Hornsby as the manager of the team, Browns president Bill Veeck is given a 24-inch silver trophy by his players with the engraved inscription," …for the greatest play since the Emancipation Proclamation". After the presentation is made by hurler Ned Garver in the Fenway visiting locker room, the team takes the field under their new skipper Marty Marion.

:be: 1953 Against five different pitchers, Jimmy Piersall ties a major league record going 6-for-6 when Boston bombs the Browns in the first game of a doubleheader at Sportsman's Park, 11-2 The Red Sox right fielder is held hitless in the nightcap, and is sent sprawling to the ground by Satchel Paige, a pitcher he had infuriated during a game in his rookie season by mimicking the right-hander's every move.

1959 In Baltimore, Rocky Colavito becomes the sixth player to hit four home runs in one game, helping the Indians defeat the Orioles, 11-8. The New York City native joins Lou Gehrig as the only ones to accomplish the feat with four consecutive shots.

1972 Henry Aaron passes Willie Mays into second place on the all-time home run list. The Braves outfielder connects for a grand slam, his 14th, to tie Gil Hodges' NL mark, against the Phillies for his 649th career homer, 65 shy of Babe Ruth's total.

1992 A's first baseman Mark McGwire hits his 200th career home run when he goes deep in the second inning off Chris Bosio in the team's 5-2 victory over Milwaukee at County Stadium. The 28 year-old slugger will end the season with 42 round-trippers, en route to a career total of 583.

1997 Marlins' hurler Kevin Brown no-hits the Giants at Candlestick Park, 9-0. The right-handed sinkerballer, who faces just 28 batters, misses a chance for a perfect game when he barely grazes Marvin Benard with a 1-2 pitch with two outs in the eighth inning.

2002 In front of 45,698 fans at Yankee Stadium, Marcus Thames becomes the 17th player in history to hit a home run on the first pitch he sees in the major leagues. The New York rookie, who hit his two-run dinger off four-time Cy Young winner Diamondback southpaw Randy Johnson, joins John Miller (1966) as only the second Yankee to homer in his first at-bat.

2005 The document which many believe to be the precursor to the 'Curse of the Bambino' is acquired for $996,000 as Gotta Have It Collectibles submits the winning bid for the December 26, 1919 contract, signed by owners Harry Frazee of the Red Sox and Jacob Ruppert of Yankees, which sold Babe Ruth to New York. The cost to purchase the five typed pages is nearly ten times the value the soon to be ‘Bronx Bombers’ paid to get the emerging 'Sultan of Swat.'

:be: 2005 For the first time in nearly 90 years, the Red Sox play the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The two teams which have had the fates influenced by curses last met in the 1918 World Series, won by Boston behind the solid pitching of Babe Ruth.

2010 White Sox third baseman Omar Vizquel, who made his major league debut in 1989, becomes the fourth player to hit a home run in four different decades when he goes deep off Max Scherzer in the first inning of the team’s 3-0 victory over Detroit at U.S. Cellular Field. The 43 year-old Venezuelan infielder joins Ted Williams (1939-1960), Willie McCovey (1959-1980), and Rickey Henderson (1979-2003) on the a short list of big leaguers who have accomplished the rare feat.

2012 Bobby Abreu, who was tied with Mickey Mantle for 109th place on the all-time hit list, surpasses the Yankee legend with a second-inning double in L.A.'s 8-2 interleague victory over Seattle at Safeco Field. The 38 year-old outfielder has collected 2,416 hits playing for the Astros, Phillies, Yankees, Angels, and Dodgers.

1911 At Chicago’s West Side Grounds, Heinie Zimmerman of the Cubs drives in nine runs to set a team record. The Windy City infielder, whose record will be tied by Sammy Sosa in 2002, hits two home runs, a triple, and two singles in the 20-2 rout of the Braves.

1915 At the Polo Grounds in a 10-9 victory over the White Sox, Ray Caldwell becomes first major leaguer to hit a home run in consecutive pinch hit appearances. The Yankee pitcher, who will win 19 games this season, hit the first of his two round trippers as a pinch hitter yesterday, also against Chicago.

1957 The Dodgers' Roy Campanella surpasses former Cub and Giant backstop Gabby Hayes to establish a new National League mark when he hits his 237th career round-tripper as a catcher. Campy's historic home run comes off Ray Crone in the seventh inning of Brooklyn's 7-2 loss to the Braves at Ebbets Field.

1972 LA outfielders Manny Mota and Willie Davis both hit inside-the-park homers down the foul lines at Dodger Stadium off Bucs' starter Bruce Kison. Roberto Clemente's seventh inning home run over the fence proves to be the difference in Pittsburgh's 7-5 victory, their 21st win the last 26 games.

:be: 1981 Attempting to break Stan Musial's National League record for hits, Pete Rose hits a wicked infield grounder which the official scorer rules an error rather than giving the Phillies first baseman his historic hit. Amidst the loud booing by the large vocal crowd at Veterans' Stadium, fireworks begin as an anxious stadium engineer ignites the planned celebration prematurely thinking he heard Bill Giles said 'go' into the walkie-talkie, when the Phillies president had really said 'no'.

1985 Von Hayes becomes the first player to hit two home runs in the first inning of a game. The outfielder's lead off homer and a grand slam in the Phillies' nine-run first frame contribute to Philadelphia's 26-7 rout of the Mets.

1988 Yankee skipper Billy Martin, due to a shortage of right-handed hitters to face Orioles’ southpaw Jeff Ballard, decides to use starting pitcher Rick Rhoden as his designated hitter, making the right-hander the first hurler ever to start at the position. In his lone plate appearance, the right-handed hurler hits a sacrifice fly before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning of the Yankees’ 8-6 victory over Baltimore.

1989 Dwight Evans plays in his 2,293rd game wearing a Red Sox uniform, surpassing Ted Williams's total to become second on the all-time list for games played with the team. Carl Yastrzemski holds the franchise mark, playing in 3,308 contests before he retired in 1983.

1990 At the age of 43, Ranger Nolan Ryan no-hits the A's, 5-0, becoming the oldest player to throw a no-hitter, extending his major league record to six. The 'Ryan Express' becomes the first player to throw one in three different decades and to accomplish the feat for three different teams.

1995 Lee Smith sets a major league record, nailing down his 16th consecutive save in 16 appearances. Doug Jones had previously set the mark in 1988, recording 15 straight saves in 15 appearances with the Indians.

1995 Yankee starting pitcher Mariano Rivera, allowing five runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings in the team's eventual 10-7 victory over Seattle, is sent back to the minors leagues. The Bombers' starting shortstop, a 20 year-old infielder named Derek Jeter, will also be demoted after Bronx ballpark contest.

2003 The Yankees are no-hit for the first time since 1958, when the Astros keep them hitless with a record-setting six pitchers, who include Roy Oswalt, Pete Munro, Kirk Saarloos, Brad Lidge, Octavio Dotel and Billy Wagner, combining to stop the Bronx Bombers' streak of 6,980 games with at least one hit. Orioles' knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm was the last hurler to accomplished the feat with a 1-0 victory in Baltimore's Memorial Stadium.

:be: 2009 Umpire Don Briggs throws the entire crowd, approximately 100 fans in attendance at Winfield-Mount Union High School (IA) for a contest against West Burlington, out of the game following his controversial call in the fifth inning. The incident occurs when the home team coach refuses to remove any of the unruly local fans, so the ten-year veteran scholastic arbitrator decides to take action himself, borrowing a cell phone to call the police to help with the ejections.

2010 Andy Pettitte joins Whitey Ford and Red Ruffing as the only Yankees hurlers to notch 200 victories with the club. The 37 year-old southpaw, who also reaches the 3,000 career inning plateau in the first frame of the game, gets his historic victory when New York beats Houston, his former team, in an inter-league contest in the Bronx, 4-3.

1839 Due to an erroneous eye-witness account, Abner Doubleday is given credit for establishing the first baseball game is played in America. The Hall of Fame, which opens a century later in Cooperstown, celebrates the origin of national pastime in this small upstate New York town although it is doubtful the West Point cadet was ever there or ever watched a baseball game.

1880 At the Worcester Agriculture Fairgrounds, Lee Richmond pitches the first perfect game, beating Cleveland, 4-0. The 23 year-old rookie southpaw threw a no-hitter in a collegiate exhibition against the White Stockings last season.

1928 Lou Gehrig collects fourteen total bases when he blasts two triples and two homers. The Yankee first baseman's offensive leads the Bronx Bombers to a 15-7 win over the Chicago at Comiskey Park.

1939 With much of its funding provided by the Clark Foundation, a charitable organization established by the Singer Sewing Machine Company, the Baseball Hall of Fame is dedicated in Cooperstown, the site selected due to an erroneous report made that claimed Abner Doubleday had invented the game in the small town located in upstate New York. Players selected from the first four Hall of Fame induction elections are enshrined as its first members.

1939 In front of a record crowd of 23,864 fans at Ruppert Stadium, Lou Gehrig plays his last game as a Yankee during an exhibition game against the Kansas City Blues, their AA farm team. Playing only three innings and batting eighth, the 'Iron Horse' grounds out weakly to second base in his only at-bat.

1954 The Indians (35-17) move into first place when Bob Feller gets his 2,500th career strikeout in the Tribe's 4-3 victory over Boston at Fenway Park. Rapid Rob will finish his 18-year major league career striking out 2,581 hitters, an average of more than six batters a game.

:be: 1959 Despite giving up a hit in the bottom of the sixth in the Giants' 3-0 victory over Philadelphia, Mike McCormick is credited with a no-hitter when the game is rained out and the inning is never completed, statistically erasing the hit. The right-hander's five-inning rain-shortened no-no will be taken out of the record book due to a rule change in 1991 that mandates a game must last for at least nine innings for the hitless effort to be called an official no-hitter.

1962 In the Braves' 15-2 rout of LA at County Stadium, the Aaron brothers both homer in the same game with Tommie connecting in the bottom of the eighth after his older bother Hank had hit one out in the second. The Milwaukee teammates will also accomplish the feat on July 12 and August 14.

:be: 1970 Dock Ellis throws a 2-0 no-hitter against the Padres in San Diego during the first game of a twin bill. The former Pirates' right-hander, who became an advocate of anti-drug programs, claims he was under the influence of LSD while tossing the most memorable game in his career.

1983 Before the game against the Giants, Dale Murphy visits with a six-year old in the stands who recently lost both arms and a leg due to a power line accident and is asked by the girl's nurse if he could hit a home run for the injured child. The outfielder modestly answers "Well, Okay", and then proceeds to hit two homers in the 3-2 Braves victory at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

1990 Cal Ripken plays in his 1,308th consecutive game, moving into second-place on the all-time list ahead of former Yankee and Red Sox shortstop Everett Scott (1918-1925).

1997 After 126 years of major league play, the first interleague game in history is played when the Giants defeat the Rangers, 4-3, at the Ballpark in Texas.Darryl Hamilton picks up the first ever Interleague hit and Glenallen Hill becomes the National League's first regular season designated hitter.

2002 In the third inning of the Padres' 2-0 victory over Baltimore at Camden Yards, Brian Lawrence strikes out the side on nine pitches, with only one being a called strike. The 26 year-old right-hander becomes the 36th pitcher in baseball history to accomplish the feat when he whiffs Brook Fordyce, Jerry Hairston and Melvin Mora, who all go down swinging.

2004 In interleague action, Barry Bonds (675) of the Giants and Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro (536 and 537 to pass Mickey Mantle) both homer in a 9-6 San Francisco victory at Camden Yards. The sluggers join Willie Mays and Ernie Banks (1970) and Mays and Hank Aaron (1971) as only the third pair in baseball history to have 500 career home runs and connect in the same game.

2007 Using a 102-mph fastball and an untouchable curveball, 24 year-old right-hander Justin Verlander strikes out a career-high 12 batters en route to throwing a no-hitter against Milwaukee. The 4-0 hitless gem, which features several outstanding defensive plays from his Tiger teammates, is the first no-no thrown at Detroit's Comerica Park.

2010 During a 10-2 rout of Philadelphia at Fenway Park, Daniel Nava hits a grand slam on the first pitch he sees as a major leaguer. The 27 year-old Red Sox left fielder, recently called up from Triple-A Pawtucket, hits his bases loaded round-tripper in the second inning off Joe Blanton to become only the second player in big league history to accomplish the feat, joining Kevin Kouzmanoff, who went yard with the bases juiced with Cleveland in 2004.

2012 Alex Rodriguez ties Lou Gehrig's 74 year-old major league record when he hits his 23rd career grand slam in a 6-4 victory over Atlanta at Turner Field. The Yankee third baseman's historic homer over the left field fence comes off an eighth-inning 3-2 pitch thrown by Jonny Venters, tying the game at 4-4.

1905 New York hurler Christy Mathewson pitches his second career no-hitter, defeating the Cubs, 1-0. In 1901, 20 year-old 'Matty' became the first rookie in the modern era to throw a no-no, holding the Cardinals hitless in the Giants' 5-0 victory at Robison Field.

:bi: 1913 In the top of the ninth inning with no outs at New York's Polo Grounds, Christy Mathewson strands a runner on third base to record his 300th victory when the Giants edge the Cubs, 3-2. During his 17-year major league career, 'Big Six' will compile a 373-188 record.

1921 Babe Ruth pitches the first five innings and hits two home runs in the Yankees' 11-8 victory over the Tigers at the Polo Grounds. The 'Bambino' will break his own major league record this year, going deep 59 times, but this is the only time this season he will be the starting pitcher for the Bronx Bombers.

:be: 1924 After Bob Meusel is plunked on the back by Bert Cole, the Yankee outfielder hurls his bat at the Detroit southpaw and charges the mound. The resulting ninth-inning melee includes players, fans and the police, and when ump Billy Evans is unable to clear the field after nearly a thirty minute delay, he forfeits the game to New York, 10-6.

1947 In the first night game played at Fenway Park, the Red Sox score all their runs in the fifth inning to beat Chicago, 5-3. The contest is not the first major league game to played under the lights in Boston, with the cross town NL rivals having played an evening tilt last season against New York at Braves Field.

:bi: 1948 With the crowd of 49,641 singing 'Auld Lang Syne' to the Babe, the Yankees celebrate the silver anniversary of Yankee Stadium by holding 'Babe Ruth Day'. With members of the 1923 team (the first team to play in the stadium) looking on, the dying superstar's uniform number 3 is retired and sent to Cooperstown.

1957 At Comiskey Park, an ugly brawl, precipitated by an Art Ditmar pitch behind Larry Doby’s head, breaks out when the White Sox infielder takes exception to being the target of the bean ball and punches the Yankee hurler. Billy Martin, Walt Dropo, Bill Skowron and Enos Slaughter all actively participate in the melee.

1971 Alex Johnson accuses his Angel teammate Chico Ruiz of waving a gun at him in the clubhouse while the game was is being played, an eventual 5-2 loss to Washington at Anaheim Stadium. Although Ruiz denies the incident and the club finds no evidence of a gun, Johnson, not known for his diplomacy, adamantly claims he was threatened with a firearm by the infielder during an argument they had after being used as pinch-hitters in the contest.

:be: 1973 Dock Ellis walks a batter without ever throwing a pitch to him. After going 2-0 on the Atlanta left fielder Sonny Jackson, the Pirates right-hander is replaced by Ramon Hernandez, who throws two more balls to Dick Dietz, a pinch-hitter for Jackson, to complete the base-on-balls which is attributed to the Bucs' starting pitcher.

1994 Don Mattingly surpasses fellow first baseman Wally Pipp for consecutive games played in a Yankees uniform. ‘Donnie Baseball’s 1,469th game is second to only to another Bronx Bomber first sacker named Lou Gehrig, who played in 2,130 straight contests.

2001 After losing to the Expos in 12 innings on Mark Smith's home run which was clearly foul when viewed with video replays, the Yankees restore the missing screen on the bottom three feet to the fair side of the left-field foul pole. The section was removed so fans sitting behind the pole would have an unobstructed view of the game.

2003 On his fourth attempt, 40 year-old Roger Clemens becomes the 21st pitcher, the first since 1990, to record his 300th victory, tossing 6 2/3 innings in the Yankees' 5-2 inter-league victory over the Cardinals. In the second inning, when Edgar Renteria swings through a full-count fastball, the 'Rocket' also joins Nolan Ryan (5,714) and Steve Carlton (4,136) as just the third hurler to record his 4000th career strikeout.

2005 In a Fenway Park pre-game ceremony prior to the interleague series against the Reds, who have not played in Boston since the 1975 World Series, the Red Sox pay tribute to Carlton Fisk and his 12th-inning Game 6 walk-off homer by naming the bright yellow stanchion in left field, where the ball landed, the Fisk Foul Pole. The former hometown hero enjoys the festivities from the Monster Seats as the crowd cheers when the home run is replayed on the scoreboard to the tune of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus.

2006 The first wireless bullpen communication system in baseball history is used at Wrigley Field when a cell phone, which will be sent to the Hall of Fame, is used for the first time in major league history to call the bullpen. From the dugout, Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild calls the bullpen during the third inning to start warming up reliever Angel Guzman.

2010 Jose Posada’s fifth-inning grand slam, his second in the past two games, proves to be the difference in the Yankees’ 9-5 victory over Houston at the Stadium. The Bronx Bomber backstop joins Bill Dickey (1937) and Babe Ruth (1927, 1929) as the only players in franchise history to hit home runs with the bases loaded in consecutive contests.

2012 Matt Cain tosses the fifth no-hitter and second perfect game of the season when he retires 27 consecutive batters in the Giants' 10-0 rout of the Astros at AT&T Park. The San Francisco right-hander, with the help of two great defensive plays from outfielders Melky Cabrera and Gregor Blanco, becomes the first pitcher in the 129-year history of the franchise and the 22nd in major league history to accomplish the feat.

1870 At the Capitoline Grounds in Brooklyn, the Cincinnati Red Stockings see their 130 game consecutive winning streak (81 official games and 49 exhibitions) come to an end, losing to the Atlantics in extra innings, 8-7. During the game, in an effort not to hit the ball to George Wright, the opponents' slick fielding shortstop, hometown third baseman, and captain, Bob Ferguson, bats left-handed, becoming the first-known switch hitter in baseball history.

1933 Joe McCarthy and Lou Gehrig are both thrown out of the game, with the Yankee manager being suspended for three games. Fortunately, his first baseman isn't and the 'Iron Horse's' consecutive game streak stays intact at 1,249 games.

1953 Before 74,708 fans, the Yankees sweep the Indians, 6-2 and 3-0, to extend the team's winning streak to eighteen consecutive games. The Bronx Bombers' run of victories will end with a 3-1 loss to St. Louis, one win shy of the franchise mark of 19 set in 1947.

1963 At Cleveland Stadium, Willie Kirkland becomes just the second major leaguer, joining Vern Stephens, to hit two extra-inning home runs in the same game. The Indian outfielder's 11th inning round-tripper ties the game at two runs apiece, and his homer in the 19th results in a 3-2 walk-off victory over Washington, extending the Senators' losing streak to ten games.

1974 Nolan Ryan, throwing an unbelievable 235 pitches, whiffs 19 batters in 13 innings, including Cecil Cooper six consecutive times, in the Angels' 15-inning, 4-3 victory over Boston in Anaheim. The right-hander's performance will be the first of three 19-strikeout outings the Texan throws this season.

2005 Behind Chuck Klein (683rd game - 1933) and Lloyd Waner (686th game - 1932), Ichiro Suzuki (696th game - 2005) becomes the third fastest big leaguer player to reach the 1000-hit mark. The 31 year-old Mariners outfielder also holds the record in Japan for being the quickest player to attain 1,000 hits, reaching the milestone in 757 games.

2006 Russ Ortiz (0-5, 7.54) becomes the highest paid player ever to be cut by a major league team. Although the team still owes $22 million of the $33 million of the four-year deal signed in December 2004, the Diamondbacks designate the 32 year-old righty for assignment, meaning the club has 10 days to trade, waive, or release the pitcher, who has a 1-14 record in his last 19 starts.

2010 After just seven days in the major leagues, Stephen Strasburg is named National League Player of the Week. The Nationals' right-handed flame thrower starts his career 2-0 with 22 strikeouts, second to only Karl Spooner, who fanned five more batters in his first two major league starts with the Dodgers in 1954.

1925 Entering the bottom of the eighth inning trailing the Indians, 15-4, the A's cross the plate 13 times in the frame. Philadelphia will hold on to the lead in the top of the ninth to defeat Cleveland in an amazing 17-15 come-from-behind victory at Shibe Park.

1948 The Tigers play their first home game under the lights, defeating the Philadelphia A's, 4-1. Actually, 52 years earlier the club played a night game, but the results never made it into the books as an official game.

1949 Shortly after 1a.m., Ruth Ann Steinhagen shoots Eddie Waitkus in the chest with a rifle at Chicago's Edgewater Beach Hotel, after luring him to her room with an urgent note delivered by the bellhop. The obsessed fan, who had become infatuated with the first baseman when he played with the Cubs, apparently is upset and agitated because the All-Star infielder was traded to the Phillies

1952 Trailing 11-0 after three innings, the Cardinals overcome the double-digit deficit to defeat the Giants at the Polo Grounds, 14-12. The Redbirds score seven runs in the top of the fifth and another seven in the last three frames of the game to accomplish the biggest rally in National League history.

1963 At Candlestick Park, Juan Marichal no-hits Houston, 1-0, to become the first Giants hurler in 34 years, and the first since the franchise moved to San Francisco, to accomplish the feat. The 25 year-old Dominican native outduels Colt .45's right-hander Dick Drott, who tosses a complete game three-hitter, yielding the game's only run in the eighth inning, giving up doubles to Chuck Hiller and Jimmy Davenport.

1982 Pitching one scoreless inning to protect a 1-0 lead, Red Sox reliever Jeff Reardon breaks Rollie Fingers' career save mark of 341.

1992 The NY-Penn Minor League Erie Sailors beat the Jamestown Expos in 13 innings at College Stadium, 6-5, marking the first ever game played by a team representing the National League's new expansion team, the Florida Marlins. The first pitch of the franchise is thrown by John Lynch, who will leave baseball to eventually become a safety for the NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Denver Broncos.

1999 Brewers' pitcher Jim Abbott, born without a right hand, gets his first hit in his 11-year career. The southpaw previously played for the Angels and the Yankees in the American League and didn't bat due to the designated hitter rule.

2003 Blue Jay rookie Reed Johnson becomes the fourth major leaguer to end a game with a walk off homer after having hit a round-tripper to start the contest for his team. The 26 year-old right-fielder drilled Shawn Estes' 3-2 pitch over the left-centerfield fence leading off in the bottom of the first frame, and then ended the 4-4 stalemate with a tenth-inning solo shot off Cubs' reliever Mark Guthrie.

2005 Joining Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Governor George Pataki, and team officials, George Steinbrenner announces plans for a new ballpark in the Bronx. The Yankee-financed $800 million facility, which will be built north of the current stadium in Macombs Dam Park, will seat at least 51,800 and will mirror the ‘The House that Ruth Built’, including limestone walls and the familiar copper frieze.

1893 At the Southeast Diamond of the Polo Grounds in New York, the Gothams, a team will that eventually be known as the Giants, offer free admission to both escorted and unescorted women, making the promotion the first 'Ladies' Day' in baseball history. The female fans see their home town favorites beat the Cleveland Spiders, 5-2.

1928 Bill Regan becomes the first player in Red Sox history to homer twice in an inning when he hits two round-trippers, including an inside-the-park homer, in the eight-run fourth frame of the team's 10-5 victory over Chicago at Comiskey Park. The feat will not be accomplished again by a BoSox player until 1990 when Ellis Burks homers twice in the fourth frame of the team's 12-4 rout of the Tribe at Cleveland Stadium.

1953 With a 3-1 victory in the Bronx, the Browns halt the Yankees' winning streak at 18. The St. Louis win snaps their own 14-game losing streak and hands Whitey Ford his first loss in eight decisions.

1962 Trailing the Bronx Bombers, 9-8, Jerry Kindall hits a walk-off two-run homer, giving the Indians a dramatic come-from-behind victory. Left-fielder Yogi Berra, watching the second baseman's homer go over his head to beat his Yankees 10-9 in the bottom of the ninth, probably experiences a "deja vu all over again" memory of Bill Mazeroski's Game 7 home run in 1960.

1969 In an effort to return major league baseball to Milwaukee, the Chicago White Sox play a home game at County Stadium, where only 13,133 fans show up to see the 'home' team beat the Pilots, 8-3. Ironically, the visitors will leave Seattle next season to move to the 'Cream City' with the one year-old American League franchise becoming known as the Brewers.

1969 In the bottom of the first inning at Metropolitan Stadium, Tony Oliva and Rod Carew complete a double steal, swiping second and third base, respectively. On the next pitch thrown by Angels’ starter Tom Murphy, the pair repeat the feat, as Carew steals home for the sixth time this season, tying the American League record.

1987 In the sixth inning of a 6-5 Baltimore loss to New York at Yankee Stadium, Cal Ripken collects his 1,000th career hit when he singles to center field off Rich Bordi. The shortstop is the youngest player in Orioles history to reach the milestone.

1989 Sammy Sosa becomes the youngest Dominican to play in the majors. The Rangers' leadoff batter, a twenty-year, seven months old rookie, goes 2-for-4 with a double in Texas's 8-3 loss to the Yankees.

1996 At the age of 83, Hall of Fame broadcaster Mel Allen, best known for his years doing play-by-play for the Yankees, dies of heart failure. His "How about that" signature line will become familiar to another generation of fans through the syndicated This Week in Baseball show, which he hosted from the show's inception in 1977.

1997 At Yankee Stadium, the Mets beat their cross-town rivals, 6-0, in the first-ever regular season game between the two teams. Dave Mlicki throws a complete-game shutout, blanking the Bronx Bombers on nine hits.

2006 For first time in 35 years, the Yankees play a regular season game in the nation's capital, beating the Nationals in an inter-league contest at RFK Stadium, 7-5. The Bronx Bombers' previous game in Washington, played in the same ball park on Sept. 30, 1971, ended with New York being awarded a 9-0 victory when Senators fans, as a protest to losing another franchise for the second time since 1961, refuse to leave the field with their team ahead by two runs in the season finale.

2014 "Major League Baseball today mourns the tragic loss of Tony Gwynn, the greatest Padre ever and one of the most accomplished hitters that our game has ever known, whose all-around excellence on the field was surpassed by his exuberant personality and genial disposition in life." - Commissioner Bud Selig, on the passing of Tony Gwynn.

Tony Gwynn, surrounded by his family at Pomerado Hospital in Poway, CA, loses his battle to salivary gland cancer at the age of 54. The Hall of Fame outfielder, who became the head baseball coach for San Diego State University after spending his entire major league career with the Padres, compiled a.338 career batting average over 20 seasons, collecting 3,141 hits, en route to tying Honus Wagner’s mark of eight National League batting titles.

'Zip', establishing the major league record for the longest relief stint in one game, beats Brooklyn starter Jeff Pfeffer, who tosses a 19-inning complete-game.

1941 In the Yankees' 8-7 loss to Chicago, Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak is extended to 30 straight games when his seventh-inning grounder takes a bad hop off Luke Appling's shoulder. The 'Yankee Clipper's' fortunate hit also breaks the team's record for hits in consecutive games, previously held by Roger Peckinpaugh (1919) and Earle Combs (1931), who both had 29.

1942 During the second game of a twin bill in Boston, Paul Waner, standing on first base, gestures to the official scorer, Jerry Moore of the Boston Globe, not to credit him with a hit on the ground ball in the hole that was knocked down by Reds shortstop Eddie Joost. 'Big Poison' doesn't want a questionable roller to be his historic 3000th hit, which the Braves right-fielder will collect with a clean single after tomorrow's off day.

1944 Although he will continue to play in the minor leagues until 1955, Ed Levy appears in his 40th and final game of his three-year tenure in the major leagues. The Irish Catholic first baseman, born as Edward Clarence Whitner in 1911, is asked to start using his stepfather's surname by Yankee team president Ed Barrow to help the club attract more Jewish fans to the Bronx ballpark.

1954 Joe Adcock's ninth-inning home run off Brooklyn right-hander Ed Roebuck, his second round-tripper of the game, proves to be the game winner in the Braves' 5-4 victory over the Dodgers. The blast to left field, which clears an 83-foot wall at the 350-foot mark, is the only homer ever to land on the roof at Ebbets Field.

1960 Ted Williams becomes the fourth major leaguer to hit 500 career home runs when he goes deep off the Tribe's moundsman Wayne Hawkins. 'Teddy Ballgame's' two-run blast proves to be the difference when the Red Sox beat the Indians at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, 3-1.

 1962 In a play that is emblematic of the struggling Mets, first baseman Marv Throneberry's apparent first inning triple becomes an out on an appeal play for missing second base in an 8-7 loss to San Francisco at the Polo Grounds. When New York manager Casey Stengel questions the call he is told by the umpire, according to legend, "Don't bother arguing Casey, he missed first base, too."

1970 At Candlestick Park, Willie Mays (615) and Ernie Banks (504) both homer in the Cubs’ 6-1 victory over the Giants. It is the first time in baseball history two players with 500 career home runs have gone deep in the same game.

1978 Inspired by Ron Guidry's performance of striking out 15 Angels in six innings and finishing the game with 18 Ks to establish a new American League mark for southpaws, the crowd at Yankee Stadium initiates a new baseball tradition when they begin to rhythmically clap each time there are two strikes on the batter. The left-hander's performance in the 4-0 victory over California will lead the team's television announcer, Phil Rizzuto, to coin a new nickname, referring to the Lafayette native as 'Louisiana Lightning'.

1993 Baseball owners vote overwhelming, 26-2, in favor of expanding the playoffs for the first time since 1969. The new system, beginning in 1994, will double the number of teams that qualify for postseason play to eight by realigning each league to three divisions and adding two wild card teams.

2008 In the Mariners' 5-4 win over Florida at Safeco Field, Felix Hernandez strikes out the side on nine pitches to become the 13th pitcher in American League history to throw an immaculate inning. King Felix's fourth frame victims include Jeremy Hermida (swinging), Jorge Cantu (swinging), and Mike Jacobs (looking).

2013 Max Scherzer becomes the second Tiger starter in the 104-year history of the franchise to begin the season at 10-0 when Detroit beats Baltimore at Comerica Park, 5-1. George Mullin, known as Wabash to his teammates, began the 1909 season with an 11-0 record, en route to a 29-8 record for the eventual American League champs.

1911 In the sixth inning in Detroit, the White Sox lead the Tigers, 13-1, and after eight innings, the Pale Hose still are still ahead, 15-7. The Tigers, however, use five singles and two walks to narrow Chicago’s lead to 15-13 in the eighth, and then complete their amazing comeback in the final frame when Ty Cobb strokes a two-run single, his fifth hit of the day, and then scores on Sam Crawford's double to win the Navin Field contest, 16-15, despite being down by as much as a dozen runs.

1927 On Charles Lindbergh Day, the transatlantic pioneer flyer helps the Cardinals raise the National League pennant before the team’s 6-4 victory over New York at Sportsman's Park. 1938 After accepting GM Larry MacPhail's offer to coach first base, Babe Ruth wears a Dodger uniform for the first time as a coach and takes batting practice with the team. The 'Bambino' will quit at the end of the season, ending his ties with major league baseball.

1953 Sending twenty-three batters to the plate at Fenway, the Red Sox enjoy a 17-run and 14-hit seventh inning when they pound the Tigers, 23-3. Sammy White sets a modern major league record, scoring three times in the frame, and outfielder Gene Stephens collects three hits in the inning to establish an American League mark.

1961 Pirates rookie Don Leppert hits a home run on the first pitch thrown to him in his major league career, going deep off southpaw Curt Simmons in the second inning of the Bucs' 5-3 victory over the Redbirds at Forbes Field. The 29 year-old freshman catcher's feat will not be accomplished again by another Pittsburgh player until 2012, when Starling Marte homers on the first pitch he sees in his big league debut.

1961 Eddie Gaedel, the 3' 7" Illinois native made famous by Bill Veeck, who employed him to be the Browns’ lead-off batter for one at-bat in a game played in 1951, is found dead lying in his bed with bruises on the left side of his face, most likely as the result of an assault after being followed home from a Chicago bowling alley. Bob Cain, the opposing Tiger pitcher who issued a base-on-balls in the infamous stunt, is the only person from major league baseball to attend the funeral of the 36 year-old unemployed small person, whose cause of death will be determined by a coroner's inquest to be the result a heart attack.

1977 In the bottom of the sixth inning at Fenway Park, Yankees manager Billy Martin yanks Reggie Jackson out of the game after the outfielder’s curious approach to a fly ball turns a questionable hit into a cheap double for Jim Rice. In the dugout, the skipper and sensitive superstar begin screaming at one another and have to be separated by coaches Yogi Berra and Elston Howard.

1979 Billy Martin returns to the dugout to manage the Yankees for the second time, replacing Bob Lemon, the skipper who replaced him last season and led the team to a World Championship. Martin will be at the helm this season for 95 games, and the fourth place team will win 55 of those games.

1986 Angels' hurler Don Sutton becomes the 19th major league pitcher to earn his 300th victory when the Alabama native three-hits the Rangers, 4-1. The 43 year-old right-hander will finish with a total of 324 victories during his 23-year playing career.

2000 In a 19-2 rout of the Diamondbacks, it takes only the first four innings for Mike Lansing to hit for the cycle. The Rockies second baseman gets a triple in the first, a two-run homer in the second, and a double in the third, completing the rare event with a single in the fourth inning.

2002 In the first major league game to feature four players with 400 career homers, the Cubs beat the Rangers, 4-3, when Alex Gonzalez hits a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning. Sammy Sosa (475), Fred McGriff (459), and Juan Gonzalez (401) watched Rafael Palmeiro add his 460th home run to the total.

2004 At Shea Stadium, Hall of Fame catchers Carlton Fisk, Johnny Bench, Gary Carter, and Yogi Berra take part in a pre-game ceremony to honor Mike Piazza for hitting the most home runs as a catcher in baseball history. The Mets’ backstop established the new mark, breaking Carlton Fisk’s record, with his 352nd home run on May 5.

2005 Derek Jeter, who will average 13 home runs during 20-year career, hits his only major league grand slam in his 156th plate appearance with the bases loaded. The 30 year-old All-Star shortstop, who collects two round-trippers in the Bombers’ 8-1 victory over the Cubs at Yankee Stadium, clears the bases in the sixth inning with a blast off Joe Borowski that clears the fence in left-center field.

2012 After a lengthy ten-week trial, Roger Clemens is acquitted by a jury on all charges that he obstructed justice and lied to Congress when he testified at a deposition during a 2008 nationally televised hearing. The seven-time Cy Young winner, who won 354 games playing for the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Yankees, and Astros during his 24 years in the major leagues, contended that the success in the latter part of his career was a result of an over-the-top work ethic and not due to taking performance-enhancing drugs, as widely believed.

2014 With the only batter reaching base as a result of a throwing error by shortstop Hanley Ramirez in the seventh inning, Clayton Kershaw no-hits the Rockies at Dodger Stadium, striking out a career-high 15 batters. The left-hander’s teammate Josh Beckett also threw a no-hitter 24 days ago, making it the shortest span between no-hitters by a team since the Reds’ Johnny Vander Meer accomplished it in consecutive starts, four days apart, in 1938.

1903 In Manhattan’s East Harlem neighborhood, a baby boy weighing nearly 14-pounds becomes the second child of four born to German immigrants Heinrich and Christina Gehrig. They will name their only surviving child Lou, a future Hall of Fame first baseman, who will be lauded for his durability that results in playing 2,130 consecutive games with the Yankees, and for his courage battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a rare progressive neurodegenerative disease which will come to bear his name.

1941 Joe DiMaggio goes 3-for-3 against the White Sox to extend his consecutive game hit streak to 32. The Yankee Clipper's perfect day at the plate, which includes two singles and a home run, contributes to the Bronx Bombers' 7-2 victory over the Pale Hose at Yankee Stadium.

1972 At Three Rivers Stadium, Roberto Clemente hits a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to become the Pirates' all-time RBI leader. 1974 Steve Busby tosses his second no-hitter in 14 months, giving up just one walk, beating the Brewers, 2-0, in the first ever no-no thrown by a Kansas City hurler at Royal Stadium. 1977 With five home runs in an 11-1 win against the Yankees, the Red Sox set a major league mark, hitting 16 round trippers in three games. The power surge at Fenway Park provides the energy needed for a three-game sweep of the Bronx Bombers.

1989 With the Mets' 5-3 victory over the Expos, Dwight Gooden wins his 100th career game. Doc's 100-37 career total at the century mark is second only to Hall of Famer Whitey Ford's 100-36 start with the Yankees in 1958.

1994 In a 3-1 victory over the Blue Jays at Detroit, the Tigers tie the Yankees' major league record by homering in their 25th consecutive game. The 53 year-old record is matched in the second inning when Mickey Tettleton goes deep into the upper deck in right field.

1961 The voting ends in a ‘world-wide election’ to settle the question who is the better superstar, New York’s Mickey Mantle or San Francisco’s Willie Mays. The Sport magazine poll, inspired by Bill Hoebler, a young baseball fan and reader from Pittsburgh, puts the Yankee center fielder ahead of the Giants’ Say Hey Kid by more than 500 votes, after the seventeen pounds of postcards from all 50 states and several countries are tallied.

:be: 1980 At Comiskey Park, Al Cowens takes a detour to the mound after hitting an infield grounder and tackles White Sox reliever Ed Farmer instead of running to first base, landing several punches before the two are separated. The Tiger right fielder, who will be suspended for seven days, was exacting revenge for being hit last season with a pitch thrown by the right-hander that fractured his jaw, causing the him to miss 21 games as a member of the Royals.

2003 Miguel Cabrera's first major league hit is a two-run walk-off homer in the eleventh inning of a 3-1 Marlin victory over the Devil Rays at Dolphin Stadium. The Marlins had signed the skinny 20 year-old outfielder from Maracay, Venezuela as an amateur free agent in 1999.

2004 On Father's Day with his dad in attendance, 34 year-old Ken Griffey, Jr. blasts a sixth-inning Matt Morris fastball over the right field wall at Busch Stadium for his 500th career home run. The Reds' center fielder becomes the twentieth major leaguer, and the sixth youngest, to reach the milestone.

2007 Connecting on a fifth inning hanging breaking ball thrown by Cubs' hurler Jason Marquis, Sammy Sosa becomes the fifth major league player to hit 600 career home runs. The Rangers' designated hitter, who missed the entire season last year, joins Hank Aaron (755), Barry Bonds (748), Babe Ruth (714), and Willie Mays (660) in reaching the milestone.

1916 Red Sox right-hander Rube Foster tosses a 2-0 no-hitter against the Highlanders. The no-no is the first one ever thrown in Fenway Park, Boston's home since 1912.

1941 In New York's 7-2 loss to the Tigers at Yankee Stadium, Phil Rizzuto's seventh-inning round-tripper extends the team's consecutive-game home run streak to 17. The historic homer, which ties the major league record established by Detroit, is only the light-hitting shortstop's second career home run.

1964 On an unseasonably warm Father's Day, Phillies' hurler Jim Bunning becomes the first modern pitcher to toss a no-hitter in both leagues when he throws a perfect game to beat the Mets, 6-0. Gus Triandos also becomes the first catcher to handle a no-hitter in both league.

1967 In retaliation for Joe Foy being struck in the helmet in the top of the frame, Red Sox starter Jim Lonborg promptly plunks opposing pitcher Thad Tillotson in the back, igniting a bench-clearing brawl in the second inning of the Yankees' 8-1 loss to Boston at the Stadium. The five-minute melee results in no ejections, but doesn't quite settle the matter when Reggie Smith is brushed back in the third and Dick Howser leaves the game in the fifth after being hit the head with a pitch.

1980 Al Cowens is suspended for seven games by American League president Lee MacPhail, following yesterday's attack on Ed Farmer at Comiskey Park. The Tigers' outfielder, who now also has a warrant issued for his arrest that forces him to skip the remainder of the series in Illinois, seeking revenge for missing 21 games last season after having his jaw and several teeth broken by a pitch thrown by the White Sox pitcher last season when he was with the Royals, charged the mound after batting an infield ground ball and hit the right-hander from behind instead of running to first base.

1988 At Tiger Stadium, Detroit scores six times in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat a stunned Yankees team, 7-6. Allen Trammell ends the game in dramatic fashion, hitting a two-out walk-off grand slam off Cecilio Guante.

1989 Carlton Fisk surpasses Yogi Berra as the American League leader for career home runs by a catcher. The White Sox backstop's 307th home run helps to beat the Yankees, 7-3.

1998 Michael Bouton's passionate and elegant open letter to the Yankees is published in the New York Times on Father's Day, asking the franchise to reconsider their long-time snub of his dad, Jim, the team's former 20-game winner and controversial author of Ball Four, a book that angered the baseball establishment for revealing the game's less glamorous side. Thanks to his son's efforts, Jim Bouton's banishment from Yankee Stadium will end next month when the right-hander is invited to return to the Bronx ballpark for the first time in nearly thirty years to participate in the team's Old-Timers' Day.

2002 Luis Castillo hits safely in his 35th consecutive game, tying Fred Clarke (1895), Ty Cobb (1917), and George Sisler (1924-25) for the tenth longest streak in major league history. The Marlins' infielder's third inning infield hit off knuckleballer Steve Sparks' glove also surpasses 1987 Benito Santiago's for the longest streak established by a Latin player.

2005 After building a 10-2 lead at Yankee Stadium, the Rays lose to the Bronx Bombers 20-11, making it the second time in franchise history the team is ahead by eight or more runs and loses by nine or more tallies. No other club in baseball history has ever achieved this dubious distinction, as the D-Rays with their 1999 defeat to the Indians now have accomplished the feat twice.

2005 Giving up 13 runs in the bottom of the second inning, the Devil Rays become the first team in history to yield that many tallies in one inning twice during the same season. The benefactors each time are the Yankees as the visiting Tampa Bay hurlers also had a 13-run melt down in April.

2009 Tony La Russa gets his 2,500th victory as a manager when the Cardinals defeat Kansas City at Kauffman Stadium, 12-5. Joining Connie Mack and John McGraw, the Redbird skipper, who also piloted the White Sox and A's, becomes only the third major league manager to reach the milestone.

2015 Melissa Mayeux becomes the first female to be placed on the Major League Baseball's international registration list, making her eligible to be signed by pro teams on July 2. The 16 year-old shortstop of the French U-18 junior national team campaigned successfully to abolish the country's "no-girls-allowed" rule, so she could keep competing with the boys.

1925 Max Carey gets two hits in both the first and eighth innings when the Pirates beat the Cardinals at Sportsman's Park, 24-6. The feat will not be accomplished again until Rennie Stennett, also with Pittsburgh, collects two hits in one inning twice, the first and the fifth frames, in 1975.

1926 The Cardinals pick up future Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander, who was placed on waivers by the Cubs. The acquisition of 'Old Pete' will prove to be pivotal to the Redbirds' World Series triumph over the Yankees when the 39 year-old right-hander wins Games 2 and 6 and saves Game 7 of the Fall Classic.

1932 The National League finally approves the use of uniform numbers to identify players. Although some teams in the AL implemented digits on their jerseys on a regular basis a few seasons ago, the Senior Circuit had refused to follow suit, probably as the result of the Cardinals being harassed by opposing players and fans when they wore numerals on their sleeves in 1923.

1941 In their 5-4 victory over Detroit, the Yankees establish a new record by hitting at least one home run in 18 straight contests. Joe DiMaggio's sixth inning blast not only breaks the major league mark, previously held by the Tigers, but also continues his own consecutive game hitting streak to 35 games.

1947 After pitching a no-hitter four days ago against the Braves, Reds hurler Ewell Blackwell loses his chance for a second consecutive no-hitter when Dodger second baseman Eddie Stanky singles with one out the ninth inning at Crosley Field.

1977 In a 7-4 victory over the Orioles at Memorial Stadium, the Red Sox collect their 100th round-tripper of the season, the earliest the club has ever reached the milestone. Today's homers, hit by George Scott, Jim Rice, Carlton Fisk (2), and Butch Hobson all off Jim Palmer, contribute to a major league record of 29 home runs launched by one club in a span of eight consecutive games.

1982 Phillies' Pete Rose moves pass Hank Aaron into second place for career hits when he doubles off of Redbird right-hander John Stuper for his 3,772nd hit. 'Charlie Hustle', 419 hits shy of Ty Cobb's record will surpass the Georgia Peach's total in 1985 with his 4,192nd hit, a single to left-center field at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium off San Diego's Eric Show.

1993 On his final day as a professional baseball player, 45 year-old White Sox backstop Carlton Fisk catches his 2,226th game to surpass Bob Boone as the all-time leader. 'Pudge' played the first 11 seasons in his 24-year major league career with the Red Sox.

1994 Hitting his 31st home run of the season, Ken Griffey Jr. breaks Babe Ruth's record for most homers before July 1. Although the Yankee slugger needed only 63 games to reach 30 homers in 1928 and 68 games in 1930, Junior accomplishes the feat in the Mariners' 70th game of the season.

:be: 1999 Although he has been dead for fifty-one years, Hack Wilson is awarded another RBI, increasing his major league RBI record to 191. The commissioner's office revises the total after baseball's historian Jerome Holtzman discovered the Cubs outfielder did not get credit for driving in Kiki Cuyler with a third-inning single in a game played in July of 1930.

2002 A sadden Joe Girardi, the Cubs' player rep, informs the Wrigley Field crowd the scheduled game between St. Louis and the Cubs is postponed due to the death of Darryl Kile, who is found dead in his Chicago hotel room as the result of coronary disease. The 33 year-old Cardinal right-hander is the first active major league player to pass away during the regular season since 1979, when Yankee captain Thurman Munson was killed while practicing landing his plane at the Akron-Canton Airport.

2006 Opposing a pitcher who was born in the year before he began in major league career, Roger Clemens makes his much-hyped season debut against the Twins. The 'Rocket', starting his 23rd major league season, is bested by Francisco Liriano, a 22 year-old pitching sensation from the Dominican Republic, as Minnesota beats the Astros, 4-2.

2011 The Marlins tie the franchise record for most losses in a month when they are beaten by the Angels in 10 innings, 6-5. The defeat is the team's 20th out of 22 decisions in June.

1915 In his major league debut, Bruno Hass tosses a complete game, but loses to the Yankees at Shibe Park, 15-7. The 24 year-old southpaw, known as Boon, issues 16 walks during the nine-inning contest, establishing a post-1900 major league record.

1930 The Dodgers get twelve consecutive hits in a 19-6 win over the Pirates at Forbes Field. Two of the dozen hits in the eight-run sixth inning include a pair of homers hit by Brooklyn outfielder Babe Herman.

1946 At the Polo Grounds, Eddie Waitkus and Marv Rickert hit back-to-back inside-the-park home runs in the fourth inning. The Cubs, however, still lose to the Giants, 15-10.

1950 The game's eleventh round-tripper, a ninth inning game-winning home run by Hoot Evers, gives the Tigers a dramatic 10-9 victory over the Yankees. The decisive four-bagger in the Bronx sets the major league record for the most homers ever hit in a single game.

1963 After taking Phillies right-hander Dallas Green deep, Jimmy Piersall runs around the bases in the correct order, but backward, to celebrate his 100th career home run. The Mets' outfielder, who thought of the stunt after being disappointed by the lack of attention Duke Snider's 400th round-tripper received, will be released two days later by manager Casey Stengel.

1971 In addition to hitting two home runs and driving in three runs, Rick Wise throws only 95 pitches to 28 batters to no-hit the Reds, 4-0. The Phillies' hurler will again hit two home runs in the same game this season against San Francisco in August.

1984 The Roger Maris Museum opens in the West Acres Shopping Center located in Fargo, North Dakota. Nearly 2,000 visitors are attracted to the 72-foot showcase which features memorabilia from the slugger’s 12-year big league career, including a ticket stub from the 162nd game of the 1961 season.

1993 Jay Buhner becomes the first player in Mariners history to hit for the cycle. To complete the task, the right fielder triples and will score the winning run in the 14th inning of an 8-7 victory over the A's at the Kingdome.

1996 The Yankees score nine sixth-inning runs en route to an 11-9 victory over the Tribe at Jacobs Field. It is first time the Bronx Bombers have completed a four-game sweep of the Indians in Cleveland since 1964.

2003 Stealing second base at Pacific Bell Park in the 11th inning, Barry Bonds becomes the first player to hit 500 homers and steal 500 bases in his career. The Giants' left fielder may not only be the charter member of the 500-500 club, many believe, including him, he will most likely be only member, as no one else may ever reach this plateau.

 2007 During a Class AA Southern League contest against the Montgomery Biscuits, Mobile BayBears right-hander Matt Elliott is unable to return to the mound to pitch the ninth inning when he locks himself inside a Riverwalk Stadium bathroom. The relief pitcher, who apparently broke the lock after he angrily slammed the door, upset about giving up the tying run on a sac fly in the previous inning, will be stuck in the restroom for 47 minutes, missing the rest of the game.

2008 In an inter-league contest against the Mets at Shea Stadium, Mariners' right-hander Felix Hernandez becomes the first pitcher in the 31-year history of the franchise to hit a home run. The round-tripper, which comes off fellow Venezuela ace Johan Santana, is also the first grand slam hit by an American League pitcher since Steve Dunning of the Indians homered off A’s moundsman Diego Segui in 1971.

2012 Jim Thome sets a major league mark with his 13th career walk-off home run, a solo shot over the left-field wall in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Phillies a dramatic 7-6 victory over Tampa Bay. Before today's historic round-tripper at Citizens Bank Park, the 41 year-old five-time All Star Thome had shared the record with five Hall of Famers: Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Stan Musial, and Frank Robinson.

:shock_: 2014 Devin Mesoraco becomes the first major leaguer to hit a solo, two-run, three-run, and grand slam homer sequentially in successive games when he blasts a ninth-inning four-bagger in the Reds’ 6-1 victory over Chicago at Wrigley Field. The 26 year-old Cincinnati catcher, who will extend his round-tripper streak to five consecutive games with a solo shot tomorrow, accomplishes the unusual feat by clearing the fences at PNC Park (solo HR), Great American Ball Park (two and three-run HRS), and Wrigley Field (grand slam).

1936 Joe DiMaggio becomes the first Yankee and fifth player in major league history to hit two home runs in one inning. The 21 year-old rookie outfielder’s homers come in the fifth frame in an 18-11 trouncing of the White Sox at Comiskey Park.

1946 Traveling at dusk in a light rain on Washington's Highway 10 en route to Bremerton, eight Spokane Indians players and their manager, Mel Cole, are killed when their team bus veers off a Cascade Mountain pass road to avoid an oncoming car approximately sixty miles east of Seattle. Jack Lohrke, a future infielder with the Giants and Phillies, will become known as 'Lucky', having left the bus at its last stop 15 minutes before the accident at Snoqualmie Pass because he had received orders to report to San Diego.

1947 At Forbes Field, Jackie Robinson steals home in the Dodgers’ 4-2 victory over the Pirates. It is the Brooklyn infielder's first thievery of the dish, something the rookie will accomplish 19 times during his ten-year career.

1950 Willie Mays makes his professional baseball debut, playing centerfield for Trenton, the Giants' farm team in the Class B Inter State League. The 20 year-old outfielder from Alabama goes hitless in the game against Hagerstown in Maryland, but will hit .353 in 81 games, before being promoted to the Minneapolis Millers, the Triple A affiliate of the parent club.

1962 The longest game ever played in Yankee history ends thanks to a home run hit by Jack Reed in the 22nd inning. The Mississippi native's lone big league career homer helps the Bronx Bombers beat Detroit in Tiger Stadium, 9-7.

1968 Jim Northrup becomes the sixth big leaguer to hit two grand slams in the same game. The “Slammer’s” power surge in the fifth (off Eddie Fisher) and sixth (off Billy Rohr) frames enables the Tigers to rout the Indians at Cleveland Stadium, 14-3.

:be: 1977 After hitting what appears to be a three-run homer in the third inning at Metropolitan Stadium, Ralph Garr is called out for passing teammate Jim Essian, who waited at first base to make sure the ball cleared the fence. The White Sox outfielder known as the Road Runner is awarded a two-run single, but the mistake proves costly when Chicago loses the game in Minnesota, 7-6.

1977 Bob Watson becomes the first player to complete a cycle in both leagues when he hits an eighth-inning RBI single, leading the Houston to a 6-5 victory over San Francisco at the Astrodome. The 31 year-old first baseman, whose feat will be duplicated by John Olerud (Mets, 1997, and Mariners, 2001) and Michael_Cuddyer (Twins, 2009, and Rockies, 2014), also collected a single, double, triple, and home run while wearing a Red Sox uniform in 1979.

1988 In a tribute held at Shea Stadium, Tom Seaver (41) becomes only the third Met to have his uniform number retired. In addition to managers Casey Stengel (37) and Gil Hodges (14), the future Hall of Fame right-hander, who compiled a 198-124 record (.615) during a dozen seasons with the Amazins, becomes the third person to be honored by the franchise in this manner.

1992 Much to the protest of the Yankees brass, Fay Vincent permanently suspends pitcher Steve Howe for repeated drug offenses, after the left-handed reliever is arrested for buying a gram of cocaine. In November, an arbitrator will overturn the lifetime ban, allowing the former Rookie of the Year to enjoy one of his best seasons when he saves 15 games with a 1.80 ERA for the Bronx Bombers in 1994.

2003 After enjoying a 6-for-6 performance against Philadelphia three days ago, Nomar Garciaparra goes 5-for-5 in the Red Sox' 10-1 rout of Detroit at Fenway Park. All eleven hits are singles.

2011 In New York's 4-2 loss to Colorado, A.J. Burnett becomes the first Yankee hurler to strike out four hitters in one inning. The right-hander starts the sixth frame by whiffing Rockies batters Chris Iannetta and Carlos Gonzalez, and when Chris Nelson reaches first base after swinging at a wild pitch for a third strike, he faces Todd Helton and strikes him out swinging to end the inning.

2013 At Tropicana Field, the Rays halt the Blue Jays' 11-game winning streak, 4-3, thanks to back-to-back-to-back home runs in the second inning by James Loney, Wil Myers, and Sam Fuld. It is the second time in franchise history that the team has hit three consecutive home runs; Evan Longoria, Willy Aybar, and Dioner Navarro accomplished the feat in Anaheim in 2008.

2014 Devin Mesoraco homers in his fifth consecutive game, tying a Reds' record, previously accomplished by Ted Kluszewski (1954), George Crowe (1957), Johnny Bench (1972), Ken Griffey Jr. (2003), and Adam Dunn (2008). The Cincinnati catcher's clout comes in the ninth inning of the team's 7-3 loss to Chicago at Wrigley Field.

:be: 1903 At Boston's South End Grounds, Beaneater hurler Wiley Piatt loses both ends of a doubleheader to the Cardinals, 1-0 and 5-3. The 28 year-old southpaw, known as Ironman to his teammates, goes the distance in each game.

1934 New York first baseman Lou Gehrig completes the first of his two career cycles, the other occurring in 1937. John Broaca ties a major league record when he strikes out five consecutive times, but the right-hander gets the 11-2 victory over the Pale Hose at Yankee Stadium.

1937 Augie Galan becomes the first National Leaguer to hit a homer from each side of the plate. The switch-hitter's pair of round-trippers, a homer from the left side off Freddie Fitzsimmons in the fourth frame and from the right side in the eighth against Ralph Birkofer, helps the Cubs beat Brooklyn at Wrigley Field, 11-2.

1961 The Orioles and the Angels set a major league record by using 16 pitchers, eight by each side. Ron Hansen's 14th-inning homer gives Baltimore the 9-8 victory at L.A.'s Wrigley Field.

1968 Bobby Bonds hits a grand slam in his third at-bat of his first major league game, going deep off Dodger right-hander John Purdin in the Giants' 9-0 victory at Candlestick Park. The 22 year-old Giant outfielder joins Philadelphia National pitcher Bill Duggelby (1898 - first at-bat) as the only other player to hit a base-loaded home run in his major league debut.

:be: 1972 After a five-year legal battle, Bernice Gera finally becomes the first woman professional umpire when she works a minor league game in Geneva, New York. When Auburn manager Nolan Campbell vehemently argues a play where she first signals Terry Ford safe at second on a double play and then reverses her decision, the new arbitrator is brought to tears and will resign between games of the twin bill.

1985 After a Yankee batboy is drilled by a line drive foul ball off the bat of Bronx Bomber catcher Butch Wynegar, the team mandates batboys near the on-deck circle will be required to wear batting helmets. The new rule of having batboys wearing a protective helmet while working will soon be adopted by all major league teams.

1989 The Mets play a nine inning game without recording an assist, beating the Phillies at Shea Stadium 5-1. The Amazins' set a National League record, and tie the major league mark, joining the 1945 Indians as the only teams ever to accomplish the unusual fielding feat.

1996 Mark McGwire hits his 300th career home run off of Tiger hurler pitcher Omar Olivares in the A's 10-8 loss to Detroit at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The 32 year-old first baseman will finish his 16 career with 583 round-trippers, a total tainted by his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs.

2000 After starting in the bottom of the first with a round-tripper, Darin Erstad ends the game in the bottom of the 11th inning with a walk-off home run, giving the Angels a 7-6 victory over Minnesota at Edison Field. The Anaheim lead-off DH joins Billy Hamilton (1892 Phillies) and Vic Power (1957 A's) as only the third major leaguer to have hit both a leadoff and walkoff home run in the same game.

2007 A distraught fan jumps onto the field and charges the mound toward Bob Howry after the Cub reliever blows an 8-3 ninth-inning lead to Colorado at Wrigley Field. The fan will be make it a few feet from his intended target before security guards tackled him, and the right-hander will get the win when Alfonso Soriano hits a game-ending two-run single in the bottom of the frame to give Chicago an improbable 10-9 victory.

2013 In a matchup of Japanese starters, Ranger All-Star Yu Darvish and Yankee right-hander Hiroki Kuroda both get a no-decision, with each hurler failing to make it into the seventh inning. New York wins the Bronx ballpark contest with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning when Japanese outfielder Ichiro Suzuki hits a walk-off home run.

1906 Herbert M. Whitney, a catcher for the Burlington Pathfinders, becomes the first professional baseball player to die as a result of being hit by a pitch. The beaning occurred two days ago in an Iowa State League contest against the Waterloo Microbes.

1916 The Indians became the first major league club to field a team with numbered uniforms when they take on Chicago at Cleveland's League Park. The use of large numerals on the players' left sleeve and corresponding scorecards lasts just a few weeks and, after a brief trial next season, the concept will be totally abandoned.

1938 Carl Hubbell goes the distance, beating Chicago, 5-1, at the Polo Grounds to notch his 200th victory. The future Hall of Fame right-hander will finish his 16-year career, all with the Giants, compiling a 253-154 (.622) record along with an ERA of 2.98.

1939 The Yankees play their first night game in franchise history, losing to Connie Mack's A's, 3-2, at Philadelphia's Shibe Park, where the first-ever American evening tilt took place last month. The Bronx Bombers will not play their first home game under the lights for another seven years.

1944 At the Polo Grounds with over 50,000 fans looking on, the New York major league teams face each other in a six inning three-team game (a team played consecutive innings against the other two teams then sat out an inning) to raise money for war bonds. The charity contest, billed as the Tri-Cornered Baseball Game, ends with the final score of Dodgers 5, Yankees 1, Giants 0.

1957 Young center fielder Willie Mays collects four hits, scores three runs, and drives in four batters in the Giants' 17-7 victory over the Reds at Cincinnati's Crosley Field. The close game becomes a blowout when the Jints score seven runs in the sixth and and five more in the seventh.

1961 The Yankees beat the Angels, 8-6, and Yogi Berra collects his 2000th career hit, all as a Bronx Bomber. To celebrate the achievement, a huge cake is rolled out in Wrigley Field in Los Angeles.

1964 University of Wisconsin standout Rick Reichardt receives the highest bonus to date when he signs with the Angels for $200,000. The bidding war for the talented Badger outfielder ultimately led the owners to institute a draft, which started in 1965 when Arizona State University's Rick Monday became the first-ever #1 overall selection.

1970 Frank Robinson hits two grand slams in the same game, helping Baltimore to beat the Senators, 12-2. The Oriole outfielder, who accomplishes the feat in consecutive at bats, is the seventh major leaguer to hit two bases-full homers in one game.

1987 Although the Red Sox have a 9-0 second-inning advantage, Roger Clemens is unable to hold the lead, with the Yankees coming back to win in ten innings, 12-11. Boston's third baseman Wade Boggs, who is walked intentionally twice during the Bronx ballpark contest, sees his 25-game hitting streak come to an end.

1995 Prior to rejoining the Yankees to make a start in Chicago, Columbus Clipper starter Mariano Rivera pitches a five-inning no-hitter against the IL's Rochester Red Wings in Ohio's Cooper Stadium. During his tenure in the minor leagues, Mo, the future major league leader in career saves, is used primarily as a starter, starting 68 games, including seven complete contests, en route to compiling a 27-18 record along with a 2.35 ERA.

2003 Edgar Martinez, who already holds the Mariners all-time records for games played, at-bats, hits, doubles, total bases, extra-base hits, walks, and runs scored, passes Ken Griffey Jr.'s franchise mark for RBIs. His two-run homer in the team's 10-6 victory over the Angels gives the All-Star designated hitter 1,153 RBIs, one more than Junior.

2012 At Yankee Stadium, third-base umpire Mike DiMuro rules that New York outfielder Dewayne Wise had made a clean catch of Indians' Jack Hannahan's pop fly in the stands to end the seventh inning. Replays, however, clearly shows the empty-handed left fielder never made the catch, and Vinnie Pellegrino, a fan from West Islip, NY has the ball. https://youtu.be/5f4FqzXBkAs

2015 Prince Fielder hits his 300th career home run when he goes deep to right field off Mark Buehrle in the first inning of the Rangers' 12-2 loss to Toronto at the Rogers Centre. The Texas Ranger first baseman’s milestone round-tripper makes him and his dad, Cecil (319), only the second son-father combo to hit 300-plus homers, joining Barry and Bobby Bonds.
